While it's great to celebrate and share the achievements of our athletes, let’s remember to honor their journeys with respect and integrity. A Few Thoughts - Know the Facts: Before sharing a post about an athlete, take a moment to verify the details. Understanding their journey—both their struggles and triumphs—adds authenticity to our admiration and respect. Highlight the True Stories: Focus on the real stories of preparation, sacrifice, and perseverance. These are the elements that truly inspire, rather than just mentioning names for engagement. Let’s secure the mental well-being of our athletes. Most of us who have probably not even reached half way to the winners podium in any sports discipline, at any level, have been quick to pass judgements on the ‘whys’ and ‘why nots’ of athletes’ performances who have gone on to represent their countries at the Olympics. From Vinesh Phogat, Imane Khaleif to Simone Biles, and many in between, have to fight mental, physical, political, emotional, financial and social challenges; overcome all of that and face the world. It takes just a minute to pass comments. Instead, why should we not rise together and fight to secure the mental well-being of sportspersons, who deserve so much more than comments on their failures. To paraphrase what Federer had said : A huge lot is required to appear ‘effortless’ while performing at the highest levels. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast or just love the spectacle, these games promise unforgettable moments as the world unites. For those of us as armchair athletes, there's a lot we can take away from what we are about to witness to apply to our own roles. So if the below aren't ticking your boxes, run, throw or swim me a message: Commitment: Athletes exemplify unwavering commitment. Whether it’s early morning training sessions, late-night recovery routines, or pushing through injuries, their dedication is unyielding. Determination: Athletes set goals and relentlessly pursue them. They visualize success, overcome obstacles, and refuse to give up. Teamwork: Even individual athletes rely on a team—coaches, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and fellow athletes. They understand that collective effort leads to victory. Resilience: Athletes face setbacks—losses, injuries, or missed opportunities. But they bounce back, learning from failures and using them as stepping stones. Focus: Amid distractions, athletes maintain laser-like focus. Whether it’s a sprinter at the starting blocks or a chess grandmaster, concentration is their superpower. Adaptability: Sports throw surprises—weather changes, opponents’ strategies, or unexpected hurdles. Athletes adjust swiftly, turning challenges into advantages. Passion: Love for the game fuels athletes. Passion drives them to train harder, compete fiercely, and savour every moment. Remember, these qualities extend beyond the field. I have always loved the Olympics……the athleticism, camaraderie, and overall awe in watching those at the top of their game…..however popular or unique their sport may be. I should also add…….I met my husband Michael Dub at the Olympics in Atlanta. Not competing, spectating. Even as a kid, I was always interested in the backstories of the athletes…….where they are from, how they train, their personal histories, and what they did to arrive at the games. These stories were often woven into the coverage of events. In more recent television coverage of the Olympic games, what I found ‘missing’ is the backstory. The current-day coverage only enables viewers to marvel at the few seconds or minutes on the international stage and not what their journey looks like, in terms emotional support, grit, perseverance, confidence, and of course, the team of coaches, family, and friends that enabled the athletes to reach this pinnacle of sport. Needless to say, I would like to see more robust coverage and backstories in the Olympics. In my professional experiences @ Insight Onsite, I often feel that the backstory is also missing at work. And when we ask for, want, and need understanding from our colleagues and bosses at work, it can feel like that that request is coming out of nowhere. Why is this happening? First, I do not believe we share our backstories of ‘why’ and instead focus more directly on what we want and need. Secondly, we need to prioritize a curiosity about the backstory that is appropriate for work. Not the whole story or life story, the backstory with enough context that would enable a greater sense of mutual understanding at work. I love the Olympics. Long before ESPN and the proliferation of sports television, the Olympics broadcast on ABC TV every four years were the height of athletes' celebrity status. The most famous athletes made the cover of General Mills Wheaties cereal or were featured in McDonald's commercials. Today, sports television is dominated by the big four: #football, #basketball, #soccer, and #baseball. True Olympic sports get some notice, but the big show is every four years. I know firsthand what it takes to support Olympic athletes; many stop training or lose interest for financial reasons. It's an unfortunate casualty of the sport's specialty, the dedication required, and the ultimate life sacrifice to train and prepare. Let's continue to support and celebrate the incredible dedication and achievements of Olympic athletes. They are a source of inspiration for us all, demonstrating the power of passion and perseverance. Their stories uplift us and motivate us to push our own boundaries. #Together The Olympic idea is one of unity where athletes from every corner of the globe come together, embodying the spirit of excellence, respect, and friendship. It’s a celebration of human potential and perseverance, showcasing the best of what we can achieve when we strive together. And no, I am not ignoring the challenges that come with the commercialisation as we are regularly reminded that the integrity of sport doesn’t always seem to have highest priority.
