In 2016, I had the honor of being featured in an article that highlighted a project very close to my heart. This initiative exemplified the power of public and private alliances in creating prosperity for communities living around conservation areas. The project's success underscores the critical role these communities play in environmental conservation and the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing social challenges. By fostering resilient communities, we not only protect our natural heritage but also ensure sustainable development and social well-being. Revisiting this project reminds me of the transformative potential of collaborative efforts. Let's continue to integrate nature and innovative solutions to build stronger, more resilient communities. https://lnkd.in/eKVg2kQU #TBT #Conservation #Sustainability #PublicPrivatePartnerships #CommunityDevelopment #NatureBasedSolutions #Resilience #EnvironmentalProtection

🌱 For #EarthDay2024, let’s look to the Indigenous leaders and communities who have long recognized the interconnected relationships between people and land, and the importance of caring for – and living in harmony with – this Earth. The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, Inc. is Canada’s first Indigenous-directed environmental non-profit, founded by eight First Nation Chiefs. The Centre supports Indigenous peoples and communities to manage environmental challenges through partnerships with governments and other organizations. ➡️ https://yourcier.org/ Guided by Indigenous knowledge keepers, water protectors, and land defenders, Indigenous Climate Action believes that “Indigenous Peoples’ rights and knowledge systems are critical to developing solutions to the climate crisis and achieving climate justice.” They provide communities with knowledge and resources, centering Indigenous rights, cultures, and solutions in the fight against climate change. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dmGvUi2 The Indigenous Environmental Network was founded by grassroots Indigenous peoples and individuals to address environmental justice issues. Their work supports Indigenous communities and practices that protect natural resources, care for Indigenous peoples, and look to global sustainable futures. ➡️ https://www.ienearth.org/ National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association actively incorporates First Nations values and practices in land management, and is committed to empowering land managers through sustainability for the protection of ancestral lands for future generations. ➡️ https://nalma.ca/ 🌎 These four organizations are based in North America, but we want to learn about more across our world. What organizations and communities do you turn to? ✨ Today and always, may we continue to look forward and re-imagine a more equitable, inclusive, and democratic future, one in which we are stewards of this Earth for the generations to come. #Relationality #Reimagining #Care #Conservation #Sustainability #ClimateAction

ADDRESSING SYSTEMIC ISSUES, as cities across America are mobilizing resources to “go green” and create sustainable ecosystems, there are still too many marginalized communities, of people of color who have been living with the same environmental problems, health deserts and food deserts for decades. How does our votes for elected politicians turn into remediation and restoration, so that everyone can be sustainable? Lee May and Gerald Griggs point us in the right direction.

It was great speaking today during the official opening session of the Youth Environment Assembly at the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, on behalf of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network. The Global Youth Environment Assembly (GYEA) convened by the Children and Youth Major Group to UNEP is a testament of youth driven collaboration and advocacy. Rooted in the imperative of meaningful youth engagement, this assembly provides a unique platform for young environmental enthusiasts and policy advocates worldwide to converge, exchange ideas, and influence global environmental agenda. Building up on the success of its inaugural edition in 2022, ahead UNEA 5.2 and UNEP@50, the Global YEA continues to gain momentum as a cornerstone of youth engagement in environmental governance. With the 2024 edition strategically scheduled ahead of OECPR and UNEA6, the assembly will play a pivotal role in aligning youth perspectives and priorities with the overarching theme of "Effective, Inclusive, and Sustainable Multilateral Actions." The Global YEA 2024 will bring to Nairobi over 300 youth in-person from across the world and aims to amplify their voices in the global environmental decision making platform, catalyze innovation, and foster collaboration towards a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. With intergenerational equity as a guiding principle, the assembly stands poised to make significant strides in advancing environmental multilateralism and ensuring that youth remain at the forefront of global efforts to address environmental challenges. At the opening session,we seek to have a fusion of high level keynote addresses from invited guests and capacity development of the youth delegates to make them acquainted with the Children and Youth Major Group to UNEP and its thematic focuses. #youthassembly #planetarycrisis

Don’t underestimate the power of your actions 👈 We often underestimate the ripple effect of our actions. In the early 1970s, Wangarĩ Maathai, a passionate environmental activist, began a small initiative in Kenya that would eventually change the landscape of her country and inspire the world. She started the Green Belt Movement by encouraging women to plant trees to combat deforestation and soil erosion. What began with a few women planting trees grew into a massive movement that has planted over 51 million trees across Kenya. Maathai’s story is a powerful reminder that individual leadership can spark significant change. Her efforts not only restored degraded land but also empowered communities, improved local economies, and promoted environmental conservation on a large scale. Her work earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, underscoring the profound impact one person can have. Whether it’s initiating a small project at work, advocating for a cause, or simply leading by example, our efforts can inspire others and create a broader impact than we might imagine. Leadership is not about the title you hold nor even the size of the actions you take, but the intention behind it and the courage to do it. By taking small, consistent steps towards positive change, we can transform our communities and, ultimately, the world. Remember that every small effort counts. 🌱

Financial Manager | Social & Environmental Activist |Founder & Visionary Leader, Kenyan Visionaries Network (KENVIN), The Lasting Foundation| Pan-Africanist| Entrepreneur| Philanthropist
During the April-May tree planting season by #TheLastingFoundation, we collaborated with a number of youth formations who are motivated in Social and Environmental Activism. I met this friend Nick, who had a calm, almost zen-like aura. He had been involved in grassroots environmental work for years, focusing on marginalized communities in urban slums. He was passionate about giving a voice to those often left out of the conversation on climate change. "The poor are the first to feel the sting of environmental degradation," Nick would say while carefully planting a sapling, "and they’re often the last to be included in solutions." Perhaps, I felt that I was the most inspired even after leaving my professionalism to work full-time as an Environmental and Social justice advocate. My transition from the boardroom to the field was a bold move, that I can describe as ‘coming home.’ My compassion for both people and planet has made me an invaluable ally in the fight for a more sustainable future. "I realized I couldn’t keep defending the interests of corporations while watching my community suffer from pollution and Social decay," I feel that sometimes, the most important battles aren’t fought in the boardrooms but in the fields, forests, and communities. Since I started this program, I have learnt the power of resilience and the importance of linking environmental wellness to social justice. Secondly, I have learnt how quiet persistence can bring about real change, reminding me that advocacy isn't always about loud speeches but about showing up, day after day, for those who need you. Lastly, I have learnt the importance of courage—courage to walk away from comfort and embrace the unknown for a cause bigger than oneself. #TheLastingFoundation, #KenyanYouths, #KenyaWeWant #AfricanYouth #AfricaWeWant
