Moore brought out such an insight – something he discovered some 30 years back, in his groundbreaking book The Death of Competition. It is a practice used by challenger firms still today (I interviewed over a dozen of them, for my book). Some of their most resounding successes began deliberately small: 👉 Getting the foundations right (a deliberate pattern, iterated over time) 👉 Learning to collaborate & compete (practices I outline in my book) 👉 Remaining invisible to their competitors (small enough to stay invisible, despite their firm's established market presence, and deep enough to build the capabilities needed) James reminds us that every ecosystem starts small. That was true back then as it is today. We now have a set of practices that these challenger firms use, to win in a hyper-competitive, yet opportune world. Getting your company to be on the prestigious Inc 5000 list requires a group effort. But more than that, according to Dave Lukas, the number one thing you have to understand is that growth sucks cash. With Dave’s former company, Grasp Technologies, where he worked as VP, they experienced the highs of 200%, 300%, even 400% growth, but had to pour every penny back into the growth of the business. So, really, it’s about making tough decisions: Will you sacrifice, self-fund, or seek outside investment? Once you commit, it’s all hands on deck, 24/7.
