Job Titles "What is the title of the position" is a common question I field- and it's a fair one. The larger an organization, the more weight the title carries. They can clearly define responsibilities, hierarchies, and pay bands. But in smaller organizations, they're flexible. A "Project Engineer" at a smaller company may have the same expertise & seniority as a "Senior Associate II" or "Electrical Engineer V" at a larger one. When interviewing with smaller firms, it'll serve you to approach the conversation with these nuances in-mind, and to ask questions appropriately. "What do you need me to be able to hit the ground running with?" "What skills would I be expected to develop with time, and what sort of runway would I have to develop them?" "What's the current makeup of the team, and where do you see me fitting in?" There's an inherent pro & con in working at a smaller firm where job descriptions come with a certain fluidity. The 'pro' is you get to wear many hats. Incidentally, so is the 'con'.

Perfect on paper and in person.. but not perfect for the job. We recently hired a Senior Project Manager for an architectural millwork firm outside of Denver. He presented exceptionally, passed our extensive process, and had (multiple) incredible on-site conversations with ownership - even discussing an equity track in the near future. Yet, within two weeks of his start, he put in his notice as he was offered a different position he "couldn't pass up". This was a stark reminder that no matter how great a recruiter or hiring manager you are, we are still working with human beings. All parties involved were stunned.. except the candidate of course. We pride ourselves on a low refill rate - but sometimes we are reminded - people are people. This industry will never be black and white. It’s as much an art as it is a science. Sometimes, things happens. Always be wary of anyone promising 100% certainty in hiring. Embrace the human element and understand that unpredictability is part of the game. An effective search partner knows how to account for most variables - but it will never be absolute. (Don't worry - we already have submitted replacement candidates) . . . #hiring #recruiting #construction #bybmym

Dear Hiring Team, Clearly defining requirements ensures precise job descriptions, saving time and facilitating the swift identification of ideal candidates. To illustrate, seeking an engineer while recruiting a manager would incur unnecessary administrative expenses without addressing the core engineering needs.

When interviewers ask, "Tell me about yourself," they don’t want your life story. They’re looking for a quick, relevant overview of your professional background. Many candidates give long or off-topic answers. Keep it short and focused. How to Structure Your Answer: 1. Current Role: Start with a brief introduction of your current role and your key achievements. 2. Relevant Skills: Highlight the skills that match the job. 3. Why This Role: Share why you’re excited about the company and position. Example: Current Role: "I’m currently a project engineer at ABC Engineering, where I successfully managed multiple projects, reducing completion times by 15% while maintaining quality standards." Relevant Skills:"My expertise lies in project management and engineering principles, which allows me to streamline processes and enhance collaboration among teams." Why This Role: "I’m excited about the opportunity at your company because I admire your commitment to innovation and sustainability, and I would love to contribute to your upcoming projects." Practice it, and tailor it to match the job you're applying for!

As a headhunter in the #civilengineering profession, I’ve seen it all when it comes to company culture. If there's one thing I’ve learned, it's that transparency is key when communicating your company’s culture to candidates. Here are a few truths worth considering: 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤/𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: If your firm 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 doesn’t have it, don’t pretend you do. Candidates can spot inauthenticity from a mile away, and nothing kills the vibe faster than a mismatch in expectations. I think those firms who embrace their work-hard/play-hard culture also have a story to tell! 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝: If your firm excels at training young engineers who then move on to bigger things (because your firm isn’t aiming for massive growth), embrace it! Let candidates know, and who knows—they might just appreciate the clarity. And hey, you might even have some success stories to share regarding talented civil engineers who maybe worked for you for 4- 5 years as a young engineer/EIT who moved on to experience great success at other firms! 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐝: If your firm is so large that employees can sometimes feel like just another number, address it head-on. Share your strategies for how team members can rise above the numbers game and become an integral part of significant, challenging projects where they will be recognized! 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞-𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: If you’re firm on being back in the office, don’t be wishy-washy about it. Ditch the “maybe hybrid” dangling carrot and stand by your decision. Explain why you believe in the office environment and share some success stories that back it up. Authenticity is attractive. The right candidates will appreciate knowing exactly what they’re getting into—and that’s the foundation of building a strong, aligned team. #civilengineeringjobs #civilengineer #civilengineers
