They have a streamlined body and are excellent divers, using their webbed feet for propulsion underwater. ོ 𓅃 Birds like pelicans and cormorants swim into the ocean to fish because it's an efficient way for them to catch their prey. 🏊 By swimming and diving, they can access underwater schools of fish that may be beyond reach from the surface. This behavior allows them to thrive in environments where aquatic prey is abundant. 🏹 Swimming and fishing in groups, also known as cooperative foraging, provides several advantages for birds like pelicans and cormorants. What are Thresher Sharks? Thresher sharks are also called Fox sharks and are split up into three living species: Pelagic Thresher, Bigeye Thresher and Common Thresher. One of these species, the Pelagic Thresher shark (Alopias Pelagicus), is known to inhabit the waters of Malapascua Island. It’s the smallest of the three species (3 meters / 10 foot long and about 70 kg / 153 lb). Furthermore, this shark is characterized by the highly elongated upper lobe of its caudal fin, which is used like a whip to strike prey (especially small fish). In addition, this shark is a strong swimmer and can even be seen jumping out of the water (breaching). It’s not aggressive (no one has ever reported an attack on humans), and once it encounters a diver, it can be shy, usually changing direction and swimming away. Unfortunately the Thresher sharks population is declining, due to illegal fishing and pollution. You never know what you’ll find when diving on our restored shellfish reefs in Port Phillip Bay. Recently, our divers were out doing some monitoring at Dromana and came across these wonderful critters calling the reefs home (seahorse, cuttlefish and nudibranch (sea slug)). These restored shellfish reefs are home to not only oysters, but an abundance of fish life and invertebrates. Watch out when you dive with bull sharks! Since bull sharks often dwell in very shallow waters, are found in many types of habitats, are territorial by nature, and have no tolerance for provocation, they may be more dangerous to humans than any other species of shark. Bull sharks are one of the three shark species (along with the tiger shark and great white shark) most likely to bite humans. For me - even they can bite humans - was this bull shark dive one of my best diving experience ever! There were at least 20 of them swimming around me. This was absolutely amazing! How to stop your diving knife rusting? Rust is a common problem for diving knives due to their constant exposure to saltwater. Here are some effective ways to prevent rust: Rinse thoroughly after use: Immediately rinse your knife with fresh water to remove any salt residue that can accelerate rust. Dry completely: After rinsing, ensure your knife is completely dry before storing it. Use a soft cloth or towel to remove any excess moisture. Apply a protective coating: Consider applying a thin layer of a corrosion-resistant lubricant or coating, such as silicone grease or a dedicated marine-grade lubricant, to the blade. These coatings can create a barrier between the metal and the saltwater. Store properly: Store your knife in a dry, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. A knife sheath can provide additional protection. Regular inspection: Periodically inspect your knife for signs of rust. We have always kept in mind the common problems faced by customers during the production of dive flags. When the dive flag is stationary and there is no wind, the flag fabric will naturally droop, causing the dive symbol to not be displayed prominently. Once the warning sign is not displayed correctly, it is very dangerous for divers underwater. Therefore, after many tests during the production process, we added a foldable carbon fiber support rod to the diagonal direction of the flag. This can ensure that the dive flag is always in a complete warning state during use and is not affected by external wind speeds. In addition, considering that dive flags are often blown away by strong winds, we have added a small rope under the dive flag to fix and tie the flag and flagpole with a rope. This well ensures that the flag will not be blown away by the wind. “Couldn’t you use one big balloon instead of multiple smaller lift bags?” 🎈🎈🎈 There are a few practical reasons behind using multiple, relatively small (approx.50 kg lift) lift bags. Efficiency: Ghost fishing gear is most of the time spread across a considerably large area. To remove as much waste as possible, we need to apply lifting force at multiple points along the ghost nets. Conservation: We are here to protect the marine environment and cultural heritage. Very often we need to be careful when lifting ghost fishing gear from the reefs or wrecks. Delicate marine life and historical wrecks could be easily damaged if we applied too much lift to rip the ghost nets up.
