The Movements’ Trust believes that social action is desperately needed in today’s world  - people-powered solutions are essential way we can rise to the challenge presented by the climate and nature emergencies, as well as the threat of fragmented communities, a rising cost of living, pollution and lack of access to sustainable employment- movements like Autosafety - Uganda who take a practical and constructive approach to cutting vehicle emissions and improving communities. Social movements can respond swiftly to opportunity, represent communities and their specific needs, mobilise energy and strengthen democracy and economies - they offer something unique that we should protect, rather than forcing them to register as a charity in order to access funding. Community organisers and social movements are severely hampered by the barriers to funding that informal and unregistered entities face, particularly in their early stages - our mission is to partner with them, act as charity sponsor,  and advocate for their work so they can access the funding they need, as well as to provide other support that maximises their effectiveness. Passion for humanity is not enough to start an NGO A friend walked up to me and told me about her passion for humanitarian work. She thinks she is called and ordained to assist the vulnerable and less privileged, hence her interest to start an NGO. I quickly asked what her about the NGO funding model. She responded that she will leverage her salary and financial assistance from friends and families. I sighed. This was because her annual income is less than 5million ($5,000) per annum. The blatant truth is “You don’t have to start an NGO to impact the vulnerable and less privileged”. Here are five key points I shared with her 📍Passion without resources equals retrogression. It is better to periodically engage in charity and empowerment programmes than to establish NGO with no fund to manage the day-to-day operation. 📍 Passion without knowledge equals wrong action. Good knowledge of nonprofit management is the basic requirement before starting an NGO 📍Passion without competence equals disappointments/frustration. NGO founders need the capability and competence to manage resources, people and opportunities 📍Passion without attitude equals isolation. No NGO is ready to partner with sucking, rude, aggressive or disrespectful founder. Having good character attracts partnership and donor retention 📍Passion without information equals status quo. We've taken a bold Step to Demystify Resource Mobilization and Fundraising Process for nonprofits. I write what I have tested with the evidence of over US $ 7.5 million raised for organizations in the Horn of Africa over a period of time. Staff well-being ..... How important is it? What does it look like? What does it feel like? Who pays for it? I have had a couple of conversations recently where the importance of staff well-being has been highlighted - both, as it so happens, supporting staff working with migrant, asylum seeking, refugee communities (a particularly hard job given the everyday challenges faced by these people). A charity leader told me funding is not readily available for this type of work (even though there is an increasing recognition of the importance of it); why do funders not give money for this?; and funders today (at a meeting organised by Migration Exchange (MEX) that I had the privilege to chair), saying how despite encouraging applicants to have a budget line to cover activities that support staff well-being, most charities do not apply for it. My theory is resources are so stretched that charity leaders always end up prioritising the needs of the clients - often at the expense of their own and staff's well-being - choosing not allocate the limited funds available on staff well-being, because this money is needed for frontline deliver for their clients. The solution suggested was that funders should not ask people to budget for this - but should automatically offer money for staff well-being costs as part of any funding given.
