The Secret Life of Buildings: Unveiling Fascinating Facts We’ve all seen the famous black and white “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” photograph from 1932. There’s even been some debate about whether the photo was real because the original photographer wasn’t identified until 2003. However, it’s all absolutely genuine, with no alterations or darkroom tricks. Whilst we admire the daring of these construction workers, our highest priority is to deliver projects safely. Finding the right angle and perspective is an ART in itself. This is the High Roller in Las Vegas. It is the World's tallest observation wheel standing at 550 feet tall. It is hard not to see it wherever you are in Las Vegas. But at this moment I knew it was my shot. The way the LIGHT hits the cabins, how the tall buildings FRAME it, and how the LINES of the central cables bring your attention not only to the yellow building but the mountains in this distance. I always work with my camera with the idea of portraying a built space with an appearance of respectful monumentality. As I have stated before, I am just one more link in the long chain of architectural communication. The responsibility falls on me to represent the work of many people before me who have strived to create a new piece of architecture – even if it is small like a kiosk or large like an airport. If I am not rigorous in what I do with my camera, the effort of all those people fades away. Thus, the main difficulty for an architectural photographer is always to prevent the photographed space from imposing itself on the viewers and intimidating them. The simpler and more essential the dignity with which you portray space, the more easily the image will be pleasant to the observer and the more they will want to know about the project and, consequently, about all those who have participated. These before and after aerial photos of Russ Talpey’s footing pour for AJ Shea are mint - not quite as mint as the formwork and concrete finishing. Even though the footing is getting buried, it’s incredible satisfaction for the homeowner and builder to know this is built solid, with attention to detail that is rare to find in the concrete world. Just imagine how the walls will look next. A side-by-side progress grid seems fitting for the rest of this project 📸 These were taken with a DJI Mavic 3 using the waypoints feature. The waypoints can take a few tries but once established, the before and after photos worth it. I’ll be coming back to fly the same waypoint mission when the panels are up and then once they are stripped.
