One of the lessons I learned in my career is to stop saying “no” and instead to start saying “yes, but”. 💼 For context, a few years ago, I was hiring in the compliance function of a well-known Neobank. A candidate I spoke with mentioned that his approach to his field was contrary to others in the same space – he would not shoot ideas down, but instead focus on finding a way to implement ideas that still comply with regulation. The more I think about that approach, the more I believe it applies to other parts of business as well, including new product development to central company operations to delivering outstanding services to clients. In all of these, feedback and a flexible or iterative approach helps deliver the best outcomes possible. 💡🔄 It is the same approach I try to leverage today at Zeren, and one I believe makes the difference between being a “good” or a “great” partner to the executive teams I support. 🌟 P.s. – in case you are wondering, that candidate I mentioned eventually got the job 😊 🎉 #zeren #recruitment

Maybe the recruiter or the hiring manager thought they were looking for youth, when actually they were looking for the qualities of energy and enthusiasm which is often associated with youth, but not exclusive to it. Don't hire based on age, gender, race. Similarly, don’t hire based on the university, or school the candidate attended. It’s almost completely irrelevant. Focus on the candidate’s desire, energy, persistence, perseverance, creativity, grit. Think outside the box. Step off the beaten track. Lead the pack. Get creative. I’m sure you’ve heard some version of this advice when faced with a problem. 🗣 Here’s my spin on it: hire outside the box. I remember going through the process of hiring new employees for Jusan Bank. The talent pool was limited, with relatively few people possessing the experience and skills we needed. This was cut down even more during the interviews when I realized every applicant was risk averse. They were happy to join us but wanted to reproduce the traditional model of corporate banking. ❌ This didn’t help us. Our strategy was to create something innovative and new! The solution was clear: I had to look outside of the banking sector. I got a lot of pushback for this idea. Many people, even the owner of the bank, didn't want to share our new strategy with an outsider. I started small by hiring young go-getters from the banking sector who were less averse to risk. Then I brought in consultants from London and China. Eventually, I was able to hire people from other sectors. 🤝 With this mix of skills, experience, age, and expertise, we transformed the bank into a successful ecosystem business model. By hiring outside the box, my team automatically thought outside the box. And that’s exactly what we needed to face the unique challenges presented to us! #bank #bankingindustry #financial #technology
