The North Sea energy transition will create amazing opportunities for the UK to cement its position as a major player in CCS and hydrogen, deliver billions more barrels of oil and gas, produced as cleanly as possible, and expand its offshore wind footprint. The offshore energy sector will face challenges on the way to net zero, but has got the skills and tenacity to overcome these. That’s why Pauline Innes, our supply chain and decommissioning director, is looking ahead with “pragmatic optimism”, as discussed at Energy Voice’s Future North Sea event this morning, during a session featuring speakers from Serica Energy plc, SLB and Shepherd and Wedderburn. As more projects gain approval, demands for the supply chain’s resources will grow. Improving visibility of this work will be key to giving the service sector confidence to invest in skills and technologies and meet demand. Progress is being made in this area. Earlier today (29 Feb), the NSTA launched its expanded Decommissioning Data Visibility Dashboard, now containing a wide range of information from 15 operators. It is a great example of industry’s commitment to enhancing visibility and collaboration. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e_qQESY6 This commitment was also on display last week at an NSTA workshop devoted to finding solutions to unlock brownfield platform electrification projects. Welcome to this weeks top news highlights from the commercial energy sector. 1️⃣ The Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) has criticised the Government’s plans to back the construction of new gas power stations, with concerns over the lack of carbon capture technology involved, the REA has encouraged the government to look at viable alternatives. 🇬🇧⛏️ 2️⃣ OFGEM (energy regulator) has opened an investigation into SGN (gas distribution network operator), to determine whether SGN has violated rules from the Competition Act 1998, by abusing its dominant position within the distribution market. 🕵🏼♂️📑 3️⃣ Germany launches green subsidies for industry as part of their ambitions to become climate-neutral by 2045, Berlin plans to award companies in sectors such as steel, glass, paper and chemicals 15-year subsidies in return for reducing carbon emissions in production. 🌿🇩🇪 4️⃣ Scotland‘s Orbital Marine Power is preparing for its first venture into United States of America's waters through a partnership with Orcas Power & Light Cooperative (OPALCO). The company known for its floating tidal turbine technology, will collaborate with OPALCO for a proposed site off Blakely Island in Washington State.🏴🇺🇸 #CommercialEnergy #EnergyNews #PowerAuditUK

Massive energy agreement with the German state-owned energy company SEFE Securing Energy for Europe GmbH signed in Berlin today, which includes an option to sell low-carbon hydrogen from 2029. - It is a unique opportunity for us to develop and scale up carbon capture and storage (CCS). It also ensures the Norwegian continental shelf's importance in the future: We need more gas to offer blue hydrogen in the future, says @Equinor's CEO Anders Opedal to VG today. #lowcarbonsolutions #climatesolutions #hydrogeneconomy #carboncapture Carbon Capture and Storage Association Global CCS Institute Norsk Hydrogenforum CCUS Norge (CCUS Norway)

Denmark CCS Update! The Danish Energy Agency has announced that it has received 9 bids from 8 different entities for the onshore CCS round that was launched in December 2023. The bids cover 5 areas: Gassum, Havnsø, Rødby, Stenlille and Thorning. The bidders include major players in the energy and CCS space, such as Equinor, Ørsted, Wintershall Dea (under acquisition by Harbour Energy), INEOS, CarbonCuts, Carbon Vault, Capio, Gas Storage Denmark, and Storegga. The final award will depend on the evaluation of the bids based on three criteria: data collection, proof of storage potential, and timetable. In case of overlapping bids, the one with the most ambitious and realistic work program will be preferred. This is a milestone for onshore CCS in Europe, which contrary to North America, has been mostly focused on offshore storage so far. In the US, onshore storage offers lower costs and easier access than offshore storage, especially for sources of emissions that are close to the storage sites

Shell has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) to progress REFHYNE II, a 100-MW PEM #electrolyser at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in #Germany. Using #renewable #electricity, REFHYNE II is expected to produce up to 44,000 kilograms of #hydrogen per day to partially #decarbonise site operations. The electrolyser is scheduled to begin operating in 2027. Renewable hydrogen from REFHYNE II will be used at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park to produce energy products such as transport fuels with a lower carbon intensity. Using #renewablehydrogen at Shell Rheinland will help to further reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions at the facility. In the longer term, renewable hydrogen from REFHYNE II could be directly supplied to help lower industrial emissions in the region as customer demand evolves. The project will benefit from the experience Shell and its project partners, ITM Power and Linde, have in developing, constructing and operating other renewable hydrogen projects in Europe. Other key project partners include TECNALIA, ETM, SINTEF, and Concawe. REFHYNE II follows the success of the 10-MW PEM electrolyser REFHYNE I, which started up in 2021 and uses the same technology. Since 2021, preparations have been under way to deliver the detailed engineering plans for REFHYNE II, complete on-site groundworks, and connect to existing infrastructure.

Over 20 commercial scale CCUS and Hydrogen Projects FID in 2023-‘24 Over 20 commercial-scale carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects in seven countries reached FID in 2023 and more than 110 could be firmed up financially this year, according to the latest IEA World Energy Investment 2024 report. If all projects are delivered on time, there will be a near 10-fold increase in CCUS investment by 2025, to $26bn – spurred by government funding and oil and gas company investment – but it remains ‘an open question’ whether all these projects will materialise, the report states. One current CCUS project supported by MyriadGlobal covers the development of the Poseidon and Orion Developments in the UKCS for project developers and partners Perenco CCS (Carbon Storage), Carbon Catalyst Limited, Summit Energy Evolution Limited, Harbour Energy . Yesterday, Offshore Energies UK launched its annual Business and Supply Chain report. In reaction, Faris Churcher, Business Lead for Gas & Energy Transition at Oxford Flow, commented: "As the Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) 2024 report has underlined, the introduction of low-carbon hydrogen to the UK energy mix will be critical to hitting our net zero targets. To achieve this, it's vital that government partners with industry to develop the standards and solutions our #gasinfrastructure will need to accommodate this alternative fuel. "The UK Government must be ambitious in its targets to introduce #hydrogen, but it also needs to support those who push the industry forward. Effective research and development are not easy or cheap, so the right incentives for innovative manufacturers, as well as the larger, more established players, must be in place to encourage competitive innovation to meet the country’s cleaner energy needs safely, effectively and quickly."
