April is Child Abuse Awareness month, shedding light on the silent scars many children endure. Let’s talk about emotional abuse – a form of maltreatment that leaves lasting wounds. In 2017, 2.3% of kids in the US experienced psychological harm. Emotional abuse, often subtle yet devastating, chips away at a child's self-esteem and sense of safety. It's about power and control, manipulating with hurtful words and actions. Recognizing it can be tough, but it's crucial. Look out for signs like anxiety, declining performance, or a desire to hurt themselves. And remember, children may still feel attached to their abuser. Let’s break the silence. If you or someone you know needs support, reach out to L.A. CADA at (562) 906-2676. #ChildAbuseAwareness #BreakTheSilence #LACADACares

Recognizing the signs of child abuse. Here are some common indicators that might signal abuse is happening: ➡️ Unexplained Injuries: Frequent or unexplained bruises, burns, or fractures can be a red flag. Pay attention to patterns or repeated injuries. ➡️ Behavioral Changes: Sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, aggression, or anxiety, may indicate that a child is experiencing abuse. ➡️ Fear of Certain Adults: A child who shows an unusual fear of a particular adult or avoids going home may be trying to avoid an abusive situation. ➡️ Regressive Behaviors: A child may revert to earlier behaviors, such as bedwetting or thumb-sucking, as a response to trauma. ➡️ Academic Decline: A sudden drop in school performance or lack of interest in schoolwork can be a sign that a child is dealing with something traumatic at home. It is important to remember that these signs don’t always indicate child abuse but should be a red flag that raises a concern. If you notice one or more of these signals take the steps to address it right away. I think about this all the time. How do I even know if my kid is being bullied, then how do I help? I go to sit in on a talk with another JED Genius (those are my words because the people I work with are SMART) about youth and social media use and learned so much. Parents and educators- take a look at this resource!
The key to knowing if something is bullying or cyberbullying is to remember that bullying is a pattern of behavior. JED’s Senior Clinical Advisor, Dr. Katie Hurley, explains how to cope with a bullying situation and empower both teen and caregiver during the process. 🔗 to the full video: https://bit.ly/3IUJAoB #ChooseKindness #JEDCares #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters
