The infrequency of rare diseases means that the community often faces challenges related to accessing both diagnosis and treatment. These barriers to care can be associated with remote locations or isolation from resources, which may limit treatment options: - Considerable gaps in access to care have been reported between rural and urban settings, and particularly in countries with limited resources and competing health priorities. - It is not uncommon for people with rare diseases and their caregivers to permanently relocate to access care. We’re continuing to build on our commitment to raise awareness of health inequities in the rare disease community by supporting global and local initiatives that align with Takeda’s ambition to bridge gaps and break down barriers faced by the rare disease community. Show your support this #RareDiseaseDay, February 29th, by raising awareness of #HealthEquity4Rare. Together we can support the efforts of the community to reduce the burden of health inequities around the world.

UEA's Prof Andrew Wilson finds patients with a chronic lung disease who live further from hospital or in the most deprived areas have a poorer survival rate. "Where you live or your socioeconomic status should not determine how long you live" "This is unacceptable. Change is needed to ensure that everyone has timely access to diagnosis, treatment and care. "A regional integrated approach with more specialist centres would go some way in reducing some of the factors outlined in this publication." The results suggest that future screening programmes and policies could be mitigate the differences in socioeconomic levels, however more research is needed into this and to see if the ability to access care closer to home improves survival.
