No pun intended. It is truly an honor to work with Joel Podolny and his executive team at Honor Education. In the three months I’ve been working with them, their passion and earnestness for making a difference in learning is energizing. One outcome of this work will be a course I’m co-authoring with Joel on “Developing Thought Leadership” with 10 accomplished executive leaders who join us on each of 10 lessons to share their insight and experience on how to advance your own thought leadership. What is amazing about Honor as they launch a NEXT LEVEL learning management system is the extraordinary focus they are placing on the toughest challenge online learning faces: student and collective engagement. If you really think about it, much of how we learn in a classroom is peer to peer, wrestling with the questions and problems posed by the course. So how do we use AI and next level technology to bring the richness of collective engagement to the forefront of the learning experience? Joel will be talking about the evolution of online education and future trends on Tuesday at the ASU+GSV Summit. He is simply one of the most passionate scholars I’ve worked with in my edtech career — be sure to join him if you’re at the summit. MarketScale

Congratulations to Maxine Swingler, Frances Doherty, Luís Gomes, and Courtney Taylor Browne Lūka for being awarded funding from the University of Glasgow's Learning and Teaching Development Fund for a two-year project "Finding Time for active learning: supporting students in the "why" and the "how" of formative learning activities" While students understand the importance of summative assessment in higher education, the value and relevance of formative learning activities (FLAs) – including staff, self or peer assessment - seems less understood. Staff set FLAs for students to allow them to engage in deepening their knowledge and skill development, but student uptake of between-class FLAs is often low, meaning that students are missing out on opportunities to prepare them for summative assessments. Nevertheless, in the context of increasing costs of living and working hours, students can feel overwhelmed and struggle to engage meaningfully with FLAs in their limited study time. The project aims to understand the challenges of onboarding students to FLAs, develop interventions and resources across 3 colleges to encourage greater student uptake of between-class FLAs, and support students in structuring their study time around FLAs.
