On Labor Day, we celebrate the backbone of our society: the laborers. Their dedication and commitment shape our world, from the cities to the countryside. It's a day to reflect on their struggles and victories, and to renew our commitment to fair treatment and equitable conditions. 📘 NEW: Our latest research: "From Organization to Negotiation: An Analysis of Labor Action in US Local Newsrooms," finds that nearly 1,000 workers in 72 newsrooms have engaged in a strike, byline strike or protest over the previous two years. This notable shift, from organization to negotiation and protest, comes about a decade into the labor organization movement in media. Key findings include: 🔹 Getting management to agree to a contract was the top demand of labor actions taken by newsroom unions. 🔹 There were 80 strikes, five protests, and three byline strikes by unions in newsrooms between 2021 and 2023. 🔹 Local newsrooms make up about 60% of media organizations where a union has been organized since 2017. #Journalism #LaborUnionization #LocalNews
