Hello everyone, this is the second of five updates detailing my externship experience at Prisoners' Legal Services of Massachusetts funded by Equal Justice America. Hopefully I can offer a glimpse into what this placement has been like for me! My first week with PLS started with a comprehensive on-boarding process. During this, I was able to meet nearly every staff member who works here, as well as learn about many of the different projects and functions that PLS has. There are many more arenas to prisoner rights law than I originally thought, so learning about all the different areas PLS operates in was super interesting. For example, PLS advocates in brutality, medical parole, solitary confinement, and several other types of cases. I have also been assigned to the team counseling jointly with an outside law firm in a class-action brutality case. I have already done discovery and data management work for this case, and I expect there will be plenty more to work on with it in the coming weeks. My other main assignment currently has been an investigation into the relationship between the MA Department of Correction and ICE, specifically through what is known as a 287(g) agreement, where state corrections/police officers can be certified to perform the responsibilities of ICE agents. I am currently in the process of drafting public records requests so we can obtain more information and understand what we are up against better. So far, this has been a great experience. The work environment is super friendly, and people who aren't even my supervisor are always quick to answer questions or lend a hand. Looking forward to what's to come! #EJAFellowUpdate Fundraising link, support if you can!: https://lnkd.in/g_UpXbpW

During the 2024 State of the City Address, Mayor Evans highlighted the progress the City of Rochester is making in public safety. Our city's safety is the top priority, and City Hall is stepping up in a variety of ways, including: - Boosting recruitment in the Fire Department & Emergency Communications to better reflect our community. - Revamping the Pathways to Public Safety Program for high schoolers, opening doors to rewarding careers. - Adding new Code Enforcement Inspectors to ensure our city's standards are met. - Upgrading streets and sidewalks for safer walks. - Soon unveiling the Vision Zero plan to eliminate crashes and save lives. - Partnering with law enforcement at all levels to tackle illegal guns and violence hotspots. Crime and violence are on the decline, thanks to continued strategies of suppression, prevention, and intervention. With Georgia POST doubling training hours from 400 to 800, an invaluable shift is under way in preparing their Peace Officers to serve communities effectively, empathetically, and justly. With the new 800 hour requirement, recruits will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement principles, conflict de-escalation, and community engagement. This extended training period allows for deeper immersion in critical topics, better preparing officers to handle diverse situations with professionalism and empathy. Now with this enhanced training, Georgia policing agencies will gain officers who are well-equipped to make informed decisions, build trust within communities, and uphold justice, ultimately helping build a safer, more respectful, and cohesive society that works for everybody. https://lnkd.in/dAsZgEXS

Today, the law enforcement profession faces a profound tragedy. In Charlotte, eight guardians were gunned down, four fatally, in an act of violence that words can’t describe. My childhood friend and best-man is a sergeant in the CMPD. For a brief moment I panicked until I was able to get confirmation that he was ok. Across the nation, we see similar stories of challenges, with officers on college campuses facing both verbal and physical assaults. These incidents raise serious questions about the safety and resilience of all who wear the badge. As we witness these events unfold, it’s disheartening to see the predominant media narratives often focus elsewhere. The stories of these brave men and women should not be sidelined or minimized but rather highlighted as a critical societal issue that demands attention and action. Recruiting the next generation of law enforcement officers is becoming increasingly difficult, a fact that should concern us all. Who will step forward to serve if the risk outweighs the perceived value of public service? As I reflect on today’s losses and the ongoing challenges, we need to amplify a much larger conversation about how we can support and protect our officers while fostering a community that respects and upholds the safety of all its members. #LawEnforcement #PublicService #EOW #USMS

PART II in my series on public safety. The first video is on why we need to hire more police in Portland. This video is on what we need to do to improve trust between police & people in the neighborhoods they serve. This is important because the first won’t work without the second. Here are three things we can do to increase trust between police & Portlanders: 👮🏽♀️ move towards PROACTIVE POLICING where police officers spend more time talking to people, learning their names, understanding neighborhoods, being visible & present. 🔎 operate with TRANSPARENCY, ensuring that policies and procedures, data and information, investigations involving force & misconduct, and decision-making are all accessible to the public. 🧑🏾⚖️ hold police ACCOUNTABLE for operating within the bounds of the law. When there is an allegation of officer misconduct, any oversight commission doing the review should include some members with experience in law enforcement—just like teachers and doctors would go before oversight commissions that include their peers. #portlandpolice #bobforportland #policeaccountability #transparencyinpolicing #pdxnow

It’s important to ensure that attorneys and judges who deal with the juvenile population are trained in adolescent brain development and how to effectively communicate with young people I work with many young people—and through my experience, I’ve learned that it’s crucial to ensure that attorneys and judges working with the juvenile population are equipped with the knowledge of adolescent brain development and effective communication strategies. Adolescents navigate a unique journey of growth and development, and understanding their evolving brains is key to fair and just proceedings. Understanding the intricacies of adolescent brain development is not just about legal proceedings; it's about recognizing the unique needs and vulnerabilities of young individuals in the justice system. By fostering an environment where young people feel heard, understood and respected, we pave the way for better outcomes. Do you agree? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
