Our last members‘ call featured a presentation by Simon Newitt from Heart Aerospace on “Regenerating regional flying: An introduction to Heart Aerospace and the ES-30”. ✈ Heart Aerospace, a producer of #hybrid-electric aircraft, emerged from a research project and is dedicated to revolutionizing the #regional aviation market by addressing its challenging characteristics, i.e. its #emissions, its low #profitability, the high acquisition and maintenance costs, and the underusage of small regional #airports. Simon introduced us to the ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid-#electric aircraft that promises zero emissions operations on short routes. The aircraft uses batteries and additionally incorporates turbo generators fed by #fuel – ideally #SAF – that can be switched on and off and thus enhance the flight distance range. The charging time of the ES-30 is around 30 minutes and it boasts lower operating and maintenance costs when compared to conventional #aircraft. The aim is for the ES-30 to be type certified in 2028 with the first aircraft entering into service before the end of this decade. ✈️🌍 A Unified Commitment to Sustainable Aviation 🌍✈️ As CTO of Safran, I proudly join my peers in supporting the goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Last year, we stressed the importance of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), advanced technologies, and optimized operations. This year, in Farnborough International Airshow, we insist on the fact that beyond CO2, tackling non- CO2 effects like NOx, sulfur, aerosols, soot, and contrails is crucial. We call for increased research funding and focus on seven key areas: -         Contrail formation and climate impact. -         Emissions properties of fuels and engines. -         Aerosol cloud interactions. -         Radiative impact of NOx. -         Interdependencies of emissions. -         Common models for climate effects. -         Airspace network impacts of mitigation.
