Airbus Is Pulling Ahead as Boeing's Troubles Mount: Airbus cemented its position last week as the world's biggest plane maker for the fifth straight year, announcing that it had delivered more aircraft and secured more orders than Boeing in 2023. At the same time, Boeing was trying to put out a huge public-relations and safety crisis caused by a harrowing near disaster involving its 737 Max line of airliners. In the long-running duel between the two aviation rivals, Airbus has pulled far ahead. The New York Times: "What used to be a duopoly has become two-thirds Airbus, one-third Boeing," said Richard Aboulafia, the managing director of AeroDynamic Advisory in Washington, D.C. "A lot of people, whether investors, financiers or customers, are looking at Airbus and seeing a company run by competent people," he said. "The contrast with Boeing is fairly profound." The incident involving the 737 Max 9, in which a hole blew open in the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines flight in midair, was the latest in a string of safety lapses in Boeing's workhorse aircraft -- including two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 -- that are indirectly helping propel the fortunes of the European aerospace giant. As the Federal Aviation Administration widens its scrutiny of Max 9 production, Airbus's edge is likely to sharpen. Airlines are embarking on massive expansions of their fleets to meet a postpandemic surge in the demand for global air travel, and are considering which company to turn to. Boeing is in crisis mode (again) after an incident with Alaska Airlines. The aging Boeing 737, facing competition from the more efficient Airbus A320, introduced incremental changes with the 737-Max, partially leading to crashes in 2018 and 2019. This week on the blog, Raja Palaniappan discusses the risks of incremental design tweaks. In contrast, Zoom disrupted the video conferencing industry with a much more agile approach. ✈️ 𝗕𝗼𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟳𝟯𝟳 𝗠𝗔𝗫: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁 ✈️ The Boeing 737 MAX crisis was a stark reminder of the critical importance of software in aviation safety. A flaw in the 𝗠𝗖𝗔𝗦 (𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺) led to two tragic crashes, claimed 346 lives and grounded the global 737 MAX fleet. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀:  • 𝗟𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝟲𝟭𝟬 (𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴): The first crash occurred shortly after takeoff, when erroneous data from a faulty Angle of Attack (AoA) sensor triggered the MCAS, repeatedly pushing the plane’s nose down despite the pilots’ efforts to regain control. All 189 people on board lost their lives. • 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝟯𝟬𝟮 (𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵): Just five months later, a similar scenario unfolded, leading to another devastating crash that killed all 157 passengers and crew. The common factor: the MCAS software, which misinterpreted sensor data and forced the aircraft into an unrecoverable dive. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀: • 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀: The updated MCAS software now uses data from multiple AoA sensors, triggering corrective actions only when both sensors agree. • 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: The system’s ability to adjust the aircraft’s pitch has been reduced, giving pilots more control. • 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Boeing implemented extensive simulation testing to cover a wider range of scenarios. • 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Pilots now receive thorough training on the updated MCAS, including simulator sessions replicating potential failures. These tragedies underscore the immense responsibility that comes with designing safety-critical software.
