The future of flight: How to make aviation fossil free. Several different technologies are being proposed. I suspect there will be no single solution but a mix of different technologies being used depending on who operates the aircraft and how far they need to fly. Clever stuff, and as always with low-carbon innovation, the important thing is getting overall emissions levels (and costs) down rather than a fight for supremacy between the technologies.

Recognizing the crucial role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in achieving aviation’s 2050 net-zero CO2 goal, industry giants including Airbus, Boeing, Dassault Aviation, GE Aerospace, RTX’s Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, and Safran have formed Work Group 13 (WG 13). Led by Boeing and Airbus, WG 13 will assess the impacts of 100% SAF on airplane systems, coordinate testing efforts, and inform ASTM International of new fuel specifications. This collaboration aims to prepare the aviation ecosystem for 100% SAF, supporting a sustainable aviation future.
