We celebrated Pink Shirt Day across Aotearoa today by dressing in pink and coming together for themed quizzes and morning teas. Pink Shirt Day is an annual anti-bullying event that celebrates diversity and promotes kindness and inclusion. In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day is led by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. Thank you to Frank Meijer, William Silk, Nicola Mercer, and Elen Hawke for organising this year’s celebrations, as part of their roles on the Social Taskforce, our national working group committed to elevating inclusiveness at Colliers. #PinkShirtDayNZ #Colliers #NewZealand

Let’s talk about why having a mix of spaces at your corporate event is an absolute game-changer. 🔇 Quiet Spaces – First things first, it’s 2024 – you need to have a quiet space. It’s the spot for anyone needing a breather, but especially for neurodivergent delegates. 🧑🏼💼👩🏾💼 One-on-ones – Beyond a quiet space, we also need places to just kick back and relax, say hello to each other, and have a few private conversations. 🤱🏽 Parenting – Not every event will have people with infants attending, but if breastfeeding parents will be there, then you’d better believe there needs to be a spot for them – and definitely not a bathroom. 🤲🏼 Prayer Time- Many events venues these days already have a designated multi-faith prayer room, but it’s something to check out when you’re choosing a venue. Having a mix of spaces at events is a statement – a loud one – about being inclusive and respectful of everyone’s needs. . . #inclusion #inclusioninevents #neurodiversity #networking #prayerroom #quietspace #quietroom

How to build a support system when you're a wheelchair user ⬇️ 🧑🦼 Identify Your Support Needs The first step in building a support system when you're a wheelchair user is identifying your specific needs. Consider the areas in which you may require assistance or support. This could include: 🧑🦼 Physical Assistance: Determine if you need help with tasks like transferring to and from your wheelchair, reaching high shelves, or maneuvering in tight spaces. Reach out for physical therapy, attend workshops. 🧑🦼 Emotional Support: Recognize the importance of emotional support from friends and family. Discuss your feelings and fears openly with those you trust. Talk with family and friends about your experience, and reach out to a therapist. 🧑🦼 Social Connection: Think about your desire for social interaction. Are you looking to make new friends or reconnect with old ones? Join online communities and share, make it a habit to attend an event 🧑🦼 Advocacy: Consider if you need assistance advocating for your rights, accessibility, and accommodations in various aspects of life, like employment. Being a Menstruator in Brisbane City. Brisbane had been welcoming for the past month until the day of Brisbane Riverfire. The entire city seemed to be out, with crowds filling every space. Everyone, including my friend Shruti Acharya and I, was excited to witness the marvel of the air show and the beauty of fireworks. However, our experience took an unexpected turn when Shruti, who was menstruating, needed to use a restroom. We naively thought it wouldn't be a big deal to step away from our prime fireworks viewing spot to meet this basic need. We were wrong about Brisbane's accessibility and welcoming attitude. We encountered locked public washrooms and three male security guards who denied us access to facilities in their buildings and restaurants. Ashamed, I initially decided to walk back with her. But after a few steps, we realized we shouldn't give up. We were asking for a basic right! Our persistence paid off when we found a female security guard who understood the situation. As a fellow menstruator, she didn't turn us away. She took a moment from her work, checked with her manager, and returned with good news: Shruti was granted permission to use the washroom. It's ironic that we had to be "granted" a basic right, but the female guard deserves all the appreciation. Women supporting women! Reality check: It's challenging to be a menstruator in Brisbane city when public toilets are locked and buildings don't grant entry without an expensive reservation. As someone who was initially impressed by Brisbane's accessibility, I'm disheartened by what happened to my friend—and who knows how many other menstruators! #MenstruatorRights #PeriodProblems #BrisbaneCity #PublicAccessibility #WomenSupportingWomen #BrisbaneRiverfire #BasicHumanRights #MenstrualEquity #FemaleEmpowerment #PeriodPositivity #PublicSpaces #BreakTheStigma Brisbane City Council
