After photographing golf courses for over 15 years, I’ve picked up a few handy tips along the way. And as it’s good to share, I thought I’d spread the love and give you the inside scoop.
In the first of a series of short articles looking at how to make the most of a golf course photoshoot, we’re kicking things off by looking at timing.
Now when I say timing, I’m not referring to the sacred art of coinciding a shoot with optimal weather conditions. I could write a multi-volume anthology about that! No, in this case we’re talking about when during the year is the best time to plan a photoshoot - which season offers the best chance to optimise your shoot.
Ultimately, the timing of a photoshoot will depend on the type of course you have and its location. Your photographer should help you make that decision and/or provide you with options (a one, two or three-day shoot plan, or an ongoing arrangement). Saying that, the greatest source of wisdom will always be your course manager.
Here are some options to consider:
Early season - advantages include getting your photography done early giving you the option to use the images during the season ahead. Disadvantages include a lack of grass growth (therefore definition), tree coverage, colour etc.
Mid season - advantages include better weather, longer days, more light and improving conditions. Disadvantages include more traffic on the course and shorter windows of ‘good’ light.
Late season - advantages are better definition and improving light conditions. Possible disadvantages include poorer weather and maintenance plans.
If you’re interested in a more in-depth look at making the most of a golf course photoshoot, let me know. I've created a pdf cheat sheet that gives you a quick and easy checklist to optimize your shoot.
Equally, if you’re looking to get your course photographed or videoed, let me know. I’d be happy to chat through some options and ideas.
