Play-based learning has long been the cornerstone of early childhood education, and rightly so. However, a recent professional development session with Dr. Rebecca Lewis challenged me to rethink what 'play' truly encompasses. Typically, we define play-based learning as children engaging with open-ended resources or various toys. Yet, what happens when we consider play as a dramatic script, where children step into the shoes of different characters? This perspective opens up exciting possibilities for igniting imagination while fostering independence and emotional regulation. By exploring narratives and role-playing, children not only enhance their creativity but also learn vital social skills and empathy. It’s a thought-provoking approach that deepens our understanding of how play can transform learning experiences.

In Roots of Empathy, children engage in experiential learning with a neighbourhood parent and baby by observing their secure attachment. Through guided observation, students identify and label the baby’s emotions and intentions, nurturing their emotional literacy. As they connect with the baby, they begin to understand their emotions and develop empathy by taking the perspective of others. 🌱💚
