Trade Secrets Case: David wins $72m from Goliath Zunum wins $72m from Boeing in trade secrets case. Trade secrets cases often arise out of partnerships. In this case it started in 2017 and ended in 2024 with a $72m trade secrets case. The case alleges Boeing stole Zunum trade secrets (specifications, insights, innovations, technology) to benefit it's electric aircraft business. Having a trade secrets programme can pay. Identifying key assets, valuing and protecting with help from lawyers and advisors like Exalt IP is increasingly beneficial or even essential. On May 31st a federal jury in Seattle ruled that Boeing owes $72 million for stealing trade secrets to power competing hybrid-electric planes. Appeals will follow. Great panel discussion today! Lots of interesting topics covered but I was most curious to hear how both software providers and users are thinking about how AI is going to impact the authoring and use of Augmented Reality Work Instructions. For some teams, those who have established work instructions that are matured over time are looking for a way to easily migrate that information into an immersive AR experience. For others, AI and computer vision can be used to “error check” what it sees. My challlenge is that due to our high mix low volume workload, our work instructions are created just in time to support production and are used only a handful of times. So while leveraging existing is work instructions is important im actually interested in how AI can be used to help us communicate between design and production to partially auto generate our work instructions. Its my belief that building that digital thread will help facilitate that down stream “error checking”. ✌🏼

Very interesting perspectives. The supply chain is fragile with resent events and the aftermath of COVID exposing vulnerabilities that must be addressed. The direct question is whether insourcing by primes is the answer or would it be more effective to spend more time and resources building a more resilient supply base? The solution likely requires both strategies but as a leader at the prime level and now a CEO of a tier 3/4 supplier, my perspectives are: 1) primes can’t do everything and while vertical integration is a reasonable approach in limited circumstances, it exacerbates challenges in creating the most robust supply chain and industrial base required to address the strategic threats (economic and defense) this country faces; 2) we must stop talking about our suppliers being partners and start treating them as partners…..partners do not point fingers when challenges occur, especially after we accept very challenging terms on schedule, cost and technical requirements to win and then attempt to pass those risks to our suppliers (both share the accountability under this construct when a supplier struggles); and 3) we must resist the protectionist views around data and begin connecting our values streams from the highest tier to the lowest tier taking advantage of AI to rapidly identify and mitigate risks early….This will only move forward at the speed of trust (which has been a bridge too far, partially due to the threat of insourcing or the loss of IP to competitors and / or customers) and distinct investments in automation / data lakes at all tiers. The impetus for change exists. Unfortunately, our history would indicate that historic change requires a historic event to bring us together with collective purpose.
