As we get further into the season, you may hear more about the MLB Players Association (MLBPA). So it's important to ask, what is the MLBPA? The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) is the labor union representing all current Major League Baseball players. All players, managers, coaches, and athletic trainers who hold or have held a signed contract with a Major League club are eligible for membership in the Association. The MLBPA consists of three sections: the labor union (for players and coaches), the Players Choice Group Licensing Program (handling commercial and licensing agreements), and the Major League Baseball Players Trust (a charitable foundation supporting youth baseball and various causes chosen by members). An important highlight is the Players Choice Group Licensing Program. This program safeguards members' likenesses, managing rights to names, numbers, nicknames, and signatures. Organizations seeking to use these features negotiate with the MLBPA for marketing and branding rights. Meanwhile, the MLB Players Trust funds community development and addresses specific issues in players' communities. Programs supported by the MLB Players Trust include Buses for Baseball to promote youth baseball, the Michael Weiner Scholarship assisting students with education costs, and the Players Choice Awards granting funds to charities chosen by award winners. Did anyone stay up last night to watch the Super Bowl? We won't ruin the score but alongside the star-studded crowd (looking at you Taylor!), Usher's amazing halftime show and Beyonce announcing a new album, we were interested in the charitable, environmental and community-driven aspect of the Super Bowl and the sport itself. - Did you know this was the first Super Bowl to be powered fully by renewable energy? - The NFL work with many charity partners that help support and raise awareness for early detection of cancer; the consequences of drink driving and support for victims of domestic abuse to name but a few. - They have a free digital education resources hub - Huddle at Home - for young people and their families. - The NFL have developed character education (helping young people to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships) and Environmental programmes (helping communities create everlasting change) - Inspire Change is the NFL's social justice initiative, aimed at reducing barriers to opportunity and working together across all aspects of the NFL 'family' to create positive change. The NFL Foundation Grassroots Program, a partnership of the National Football League (NFL) Foundation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), provides nonprofit organizations with financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local football fields. Support is provided for projects sponsored by nonprofit community-based organizations or middle or high schools that are located within NFL target markets and serve low to moderate-income areas within those markets. (A list of eligible geographies is available in the request for proposals.) Strong preference will be given to proposals that seek to upgrade existing facilities that are in poor condition or otherwise underutilized, demonstrate active use of the fields, attract matching funding that exceeds the minimum required match of 1:1, involve local partnerships to promote youth sports safety and community programming, provide for continuing maintenance and field safety, and involve youth football programs that are compliant with USA Football’s Football Development Model education program. Available grants include general field support grants of up to $50,000; field surface matching grants of up to $250,000 to install new synthetic sports turf surfaces; and field surface matching grants of up to $100,000 to resurface fields utilizing natural grass or sod surfaces. Securing school groups to perform the National Anthem in minor league sports is nothing new; but when I was first hired by the Admirals as a sales rep, we only hosted a handful of schools each season. I saw a huge untapped market and an opportunity not only to earn commission, but a way to build fans at the grass-roots level as well. Fast forward a few years and the Admirals' "School Spirit Night" program has turned into a revenue generation and fan creation machine. Last season we hosted a school spirit night at 22 out of 25 Friday and Saturday games. This program is a win-win-win. The school can add a fun family event to their school calendar at no-cost, and in many cases, makes a profit through fundraising. The students gets to hang out with their classmates outside of school, and perform in front of thousands of people, creating a lifelong memory. The team fills seats and creates fans for life. I've found the majority of students that get to perform have never been to a hockey game before, and I've been told by teachers it’s the #1 requested event by returning students every fall. The Football Association - you need to do better if you're serious about protecting the grassroots game. In 2021 you released a new grassroots policy, one of the goals of this was to focus on retained volunteers. This policy runs into 2024. "Grassroots workforce: A transformation in community football by inspiring, supporting and retaining volunteers in the game" Like thousands of other grassroots coaches Im a volunteer and have been now for about 5 years. Northumberland Football Association have issued our team a fine for failing to play a fixture at the end of the season. Note: 1) We'd been in regular contact with the other team and were actively trying to rearrange the game - neither party was trying to skip the game 2) YOU decided to cram a load of fixtures into our calendar at the end of a season because YOU voted not to extend the season (even though most coaches wanted to) 3) My players (all kids - under 12) had played on the previous Sunday, Wednesday and Sunday (that's a LOT of competitive football for kids!). 4) We'd already juggled numerous non-football things around to accommodate the new fixtures which YOU did not consult with coaches on before issuing. Seemingly you think Parents, Players and Coaches have no other commitments? Im fortunate that my club has been very supportive. Ive heard from so many coaches who's experience with dealing with The FA at a local and national level is one of incredible frustration. You want to retain coaches? Dont issue fines for events outside of our control. You want to retain volunteers? Try talking to us and stop making rules by committee. All the coaches and volunteers I know do it for the kids and are superstars. You make our jobs harder, not easier Raise your game.
