#WorldWildlifeDay We’re all in this together! Our two The National Lottery Heritage Fund projects (#MartensontheMove and @Natur am Byth Barbastelle Project) and our two #CitizenScience surveys (@IrishStoatSurvey and @PolecatSurvey) are all working with communities to improve outcomes for wildlife and people. Whether engaging and informing through social media platforms and websites; using trail cameras to capture evidence of stoats, pine martens and polecats; or acoustic detectors to identify bat species and thermal imagers to detect the presence of pine martens in den boxes without causing disturbance… all the projects are helped hugely by digital innovation. Good news for wildlife! Question: What do the Semicircle angelfish, Stoplight parrotfish, Threadfin anthias, and High hat all have in common? Answer: They’re all new species whose eggs have been photographed and documented in the Open Source Marine Fish Egg Catalog. As of this writing, the Egg Catalog has grown to include photos and morphometric measurements of 198 eggs representing 50 species of marine aquarium fishes across 16 families. Do you have any of these species in your exhibits? Ever thought about aquaculturing them? Get an idea of the size, shape, and morphometrics of their eggs in order to identify and target them in your aquarium or zoo’s larval rearing program. Check out these and other new species in the Catalog at the link below. Step into nature's grand theatre at Epacha Private Game Reserve, where you can encounter fascinating wildlife like Oryx, Springbok and Ostriches. Here are some cool facts about these three animals: 1) Oryx, also known as the gemsbok, can conserve water, allowing them to thrive where few other creatures can. Their adaptation to the desert is nothing short of astounding 🏜 2) The name "springbok" has its origins in Afrikaans. The term "springbok" is a combination of two words: "spring," meaning jump, and "bok," referring to an antelope or deer-like mammal. Therefore, "springbok" can be translated to mean "jumping antelope" or "pronking antelope." 🦌 3) Male ostriches take on the responsibility of nest protection and the incubation of the eggs. The males usually take the night shift because of their dark feathers, as they blend in better at night!

As World Elephant Day approaches on August 12th, I find myself reflecting on the incredible impact these majestic creatures have on our planet. Elephants are much more than just awe-inspiring giants; they are intelligent, loving, and mysterious beings that play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. Throughout history, humans haven’t always treated elephants with the kindness they deserve, despite all they’ve done for us. As a keystone species, elephants create and sustain the environments where countless other plants and animals thrive. Their loss would not only affect the species that depend on them but also cause major disruptions to the ecosystems we all rely on. With the largest brains of any living mammal, elephants have so much more to teach us, but we must act to ensure their survival. On this World Elephant Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate these magnificent creatures and commit to preserving them for future generations. We owe it to them, and to ourselves, to protect their future. #WorldElephantDay #SaveElephants #KeystoneSpecies #WildlifeConservation #ElephantLove
