Last week marked the end of my time at Merck/MSD. All my friends I needed to thank for being so good with me, received my final "love letter" individually*, so I won’t add to LinkedIn’s predictable unhelpful feed. I believe most people log into this platform with either a job search or self-promotion goal. I guess the rest got tired of scrolling through TikTok, and a few want to learn something helpful. Let me try to make this post useful to many of them. *If you’re interested: Merck/MSD is a fantastic place to be.* I wish more young professionals knew how good it can be. For me, it checked all the boxes in terms of what I would expect of a company where I’m going to commit extensive time and effort: 1. A great mission that is lived by all teams across the company (can it get better than “Saving and improving lives”?). 2. Excellent, ethical, experienced leaders that I trusted and learned from on a daily basis. This is VERY difficult to find. 3. Infinite opportunities to learn and grow. At Merck, I had way more opportunities to learn than I could really absorb. 4. Honest care, respect, and value for employees. I could write a book detailing each one of the above, but won’t bore you. To answer the question that I will often get in the future: “Is Merck/MSD a great place to work?” YES! It is a great place to be. I’d recommend it to anyone! And if anybody has any questions about it, DM me at any time. I realize many assume that anyone changing roles does so from a place of dissatisfaction. This is a fallacy, of course, but some might still be wondering then, why I made a decision to leave such a great place. Well, I like taking risks and explore growth in new radical ways that meet my personal long-term goals. I might have something wrong in my head. Who knows, it could be a topic for a future post. Anyway - If you haven't done so already, follow the MSD LinkedIn profiles and bookmark jobs.msd.com. It might impact your life just as profoundly as it did mine. —J — *and it was a heartfelt love letter, by the way 🖤 —I'm sorry if you missed it.

Tech / Digital / Health. | Lecturer | Executive Career Mentor | Headhunter | Networker | Digital + Health expert |
Last week, Bristol Myers Squibb announced that they'll lay off 2,200 people to save $1.5 billion. This is bad news for the whole industry and a trend we've seen during the last year. The after-Covid era is tough for pharma leaders. Some people I'm talking to are completely disoriented: they're world-class experts on their topic and have to bounce back on their own for the first time in their whole careers. Even if for example, you're a Cell Therapy bigshot, you're not...immune to layoffs. The only people who are "protected" are the ones who shine and help the company they work for shine too 🌟 That's why you NEED to define your personal brand — what sets you apart, your values, your motivations, and how you approach your work. And your positioning as well: carving out your niche and differentiating yourself from others in the field. I'm explaining how in a 9-page checklist with 32 items, including: → Actions for building an impactful digital presence → Tactics for personal and professional growth → How to articulate your leadership vision → ...and much more And I'll send it to you for free: 1. Comment "Checklist" (or anything else that'll make me understand you're interested) 2. Connect with me (so that I can send you the PDF) 3. That's it! What it'll (hopefully) bring me: some visibility for my coaching & recruitment services What it'll (hopefully) bring you: tips to propel your career to the next level and become "layoff-immune" Let's go 💬

Helping smart Pharma leaders close the gender gap without expensive external hires | Coaching | Mentoring
When you are frustrated and it feels like everyone else gets the attention and kudos, it can be tempting to just disengage. Working out how to be recognised seems too hard. And anything changing is too far away. Take a breath. When you started your career, where you are now was a long way away. And yet you did it. Trust me, learning how to be recognised appropriately is easier than learning all the things that got you this far. But it does take a bit of courage. Which is scary. Because when did you last do something you didn’t know how to do backwards, upside down and blindfolded? So break it down into manageable steps. Instead of ‘I’m going to ask for a promotion today’, (which might blindside your manager), start with something more manageable, like explaining what issues you have prevented over the last couple of weeks. And celebrate each step. Because as each step gets more comfortable, it takes less courage to do the next. And remember to look back sometimes, and notice what you have achieved. Not just how far you have to go. #professionalwomen #pharma #gendergap #genderequity

When “Uncomfortable” is Good I was confident, even comfortable, when 2024 started. I was leading a business where our medicines and vaccines are leaders, surrounded by familiar GSK people and customers. The work was challenging but known. In mid-March I changed roles to lead a business that was new to me in the US. First priorities?......build trust and credibility while accelerating performance and delivering the pipeline. - Trust and credibility: my words and actions, whether with large groups or 1:1s, match and remain consistent. - Accelerate performance: set a single definition of winning across all orgs and functions and ensure all operations support that alone. - Deliver the pipeline: ensure base assumptions are the same across the org and explicitly tie resourcing to clinical read outs I was immediately comfortable with many new faces, the rhythm and "feel" of the team...because we have a single culture at GSK.....and our business continued to perform because we live our culture regardless of change. - Be ambitious for patients, - Be accountable for impact, and - Do the right thing. 3+ months in.... - Am I unconformable compared to my prior job? Yep. - Do I like it? Mostly, but not every single moment because I don't instinctively know what to do compared to my former role. - Am I truly happy I changed roles? Absolutely. I am growing, developing and challenged every day. #AheadTogether

Get Bigger People go to the gym and work out for many reasons, but the majority of the reasons can put in the category of getting bigger. Yes, some people want bigger muscles while others want more stamina or overall better levels of health and fitness. But what they have in common is that they are seeking is somehow more than when they started. Building on my previous post to Be Bigger, each of us is presented with the opportunity to get bigger every day. Those who take advantage of the opportunities find themselves better prepared and equipped for the next challenge coming down the road. For far too long in my career, I did not realize the opportunity which was in front of me. As a result, I struggled longer than I should have with a whole number of challenges. In those times, I took some measure of comfort knowing others were struggling with the same things I was, and many of them struggled more than I did. There is an old Theodore Roosevelt quote that goes like this: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I had some faulty thinking in those days. At the time I thought comparison was the beginning of joy. I should just be happy I am not struggling as bad as others are. What horrible thinking and what a poor mindset I had in those days. When I decided to get bigger, it actually started with my health. I was tired of losing my breath walking up a couple flights of stairs. So, I started walking. Ten thousand steps a day was my goal. I came to a quick judgment on this practice. It sucked! I hated it! It was boring. So, I took the advice of my wife and I started listening to some podcasts. They were fluffy podcasts about travel and entertainment. But then I came across some that opened my eyes to getting bigger. I didn’t realize it at the time, that is for sure. But I started growing and getting bigger. Then something crazy happened. I started reading two pages of a book when I got to work each morning. As my computer was booting up, I could read these short pages and find some new thought or perspective to consider and practice throughout the day. This is when I started getting bigger. You are likely quicker than I am. You may already have a plan in place to get bigger every day. If you do, I am so glad for you. You are preparing with the next challenges you will face. If you are not preparing, I just have to wonder what you are waiting for. The next challenges we will face individually and collectively as a profession and an industry are on their way. I don’t know when they will get here, but I do know it keeps getting closer. Allow me to encourage you to get bigger every day! #forpharmacy #forpharmacists #pharmacists #pharmacyleadership #leadwell #EveryoneDeservesToBeLedWell #KeepPharmacistsImproving
Be Bigger There are many things in life that remind and require us to be bigger. If you were to go to the amusement park, you would find many rides that have a height requirement to ride them. These requirements are for your safety. If you are not tall enough, you are not permitted to ride the ride. I had a conversation earlier this week that made me realize that many of the problems we face in life should come with similar warning. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some type of requirement to be able to go through the experience of a market correction or the loss of a job or acquisition of your company? It may just me, but I think that would be nice. The reality is that no such requirement exists. I started my pharmacy career with a chain called Thrift Drug. While I was in pharmacy school, Thrift became Eckerd. This was my first experience with massive change and uncertainty in the pharmacy world. Over the years, I would go through several acquisitions (or potential acquisitions). Because I had gone through that process before, I had a better perspective and knew what to expect. In essence, I had gotten bigger. This happened quite by accident over the years. I certainly didn’t go looking for problems. The thing about life is that new problems keep coming. They do not stop. But what we can do is work to be bigger than our problems. When we are bigger than our problems, we can roll them quickly and efficiently. When we are smaller than our problems, we must fight and claw our way through them. This can be quite costly. I spent far too many years struggling with various challenges, but each of those challenges would not have been as bad if I was bigger. Allow me to invite you today to be bigger. When we are bigger, we cab do so many more things – even riding the big rides at the amusement park! #forpharmacy #forpharmacists #pharmacists #pharmacyleadership #leadwell #EveryoneDeservesToBeLedWell #KeepPharmacistsImproving
