This week, in honor of National Intern Day, we’ve been highlighting some of our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) student interns! Meet Lincoln Queale, a Mathematics major at Mount St. Mary’s University. Lincoln is researching simulation and statistical modeling of high-cycle metal fatigue data at the Boulder, CO campus. Q: What is a high-level overview of the work you do at NIST? I am working in the Statistical Engineering Division to try to evaluate and improve models for high-cycle metal fatigue data. A group in the Materials Measurement Lab at NIST is working to understand the fatigue strength of additively manufactured metals (essentially 3D printing metals) by measuring how many cycles of stress it takes for samples to break at a variety of different stress values. Because of time and material constraints on how this data is collected, there are censored data points and a relatively small number of data points overall. These factors combined make many traditional modeling techniques less effective. I am currently researching which models work best while also improving those models and, as part of that, making effective data simulations to work with. These metals are being increasingly used in critical roles, from aerospace applications to medical devices, where it’s critical to know when these materials are at risk of failure. Q: What is your favorite thing about NIST/SURF? I really enjoy the office culture and getting the opportunity to explore Colorado with new friends in my free time. Q: What advice would you give to students interested in SURF? Apply early, and more importantly ask your references to write your letters of recommendation early. Also, check your email regularly and try to respond promptly to any follow-up communications you receive. I would also encourage you to be open to different projects. #StriversSDESheet Challenge - Day 71 --Mastering Trees-- Problems Solved: 1 1. Boundary Traversal of Binary Tree -- https://lnkd.in/ePnbsR-d The idea was to traverse the binary tree in 3 ways 1. Towards the left 2. From bottom left to bottom right 3. Towards right and reverse the order We write 3 functions to define traversals accordingly and add their output to our resultant list to give the boundary traversal. To traverse the left boundary, initialize a pointer, cur, to the root's left. In each iteration, if cur is not a leaf node, print it and move left. If there's no left child, move to the right of cur. Continue this process until cur points to NULL. For printing leaf nodes, perform a simple preorder traversal and print the current node if it's a leaf node. To traverse the right boundary in reverse, initialize cur to the right child of the root and use an auxiliary list. In each iteration, if the current node is not a leaf, push it to the auxiliary list. Move right if possible; otherwise, move left. Stop when cur is NULL. That's it for the day! MUNI UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Today, we had a highly productive session with the Muni University team to discuss the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering at Muni University. Our focus was on reviewing the proposed curriculum for the faculty. It is crucial to recognize the dynamic nature of the field of engineering. The era of digitalization brings about remarkable advancements and hurdles that necessitate a proactive and forward-looking approach to education. Our goal is to craft a curriculum that not only adapts to these changes but also positions our students as pioneers in technological innovation. During the session, we were accompanied by Eng. Pariyo Lawrence from UNRA, along with numerous other engineers who contributed their insights online. We have expanded the curriculum to include some key areas, such as: 1. Design Thinking for Engineers 2. Artificial Intelligence for Engineers 3. Computer-Aided Design for Engineers 4. Innovation and Entrepreneurship 5. Soft Skills for Engineers 6. Integration of Emerging Technologies By incorporating these additional components, we aim to equip our students with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving engineering landscape. To create a relevant and impactful curriculum, we must foster strong partnerships with industry leaders. This connection will provide our students with practical experiences through internships, co-op programs, and industry-led projects. You remembered when I started my 6 Months Internship in American University? Well I defended it today in School and it went well. The Lecturer asked me 2 Questions. 1. What is the difference between LaserJet printer and Inkjet Printer? 2. If a computer is making intermittent sound but it's not booting ON, what could be responsible? Guys, I was a frightened, I didn't know what to say because I didn't concentrate on the types of Printers, I just worked on Laser Scanning Unit of the printer, repairing faulty cartridge and maintenance of a Printer; but after some deliberations, I said "Sir, can you repeat the question again so that I can attempt it?" He said it again and I responded with two key words "Toner Cartridge". Lesson: 1. Learn to ATTEMPT. Giving up is an easier option but not the best option. (I was awarded half mark for that by the ways). Good news!!! I now know that an Inkjet Printer uses Ink to print and LaserJet uses Toner to print images, the paper is usually hot. 2. FAIL- means First Attempt In Learning. You might Fail when Attempting but at least you gained. The second question was quite confusing for me because one of the sign of a Hard drive failure is whirring sound made my moving part of Hard drive that is wearing off. But since the laptop is not coming ON, it's the problem of the RAM due to loose connection or hardware malfunction. 🌟 Excited to share the successful completion of my 15 days internship at InFocus Electronics Technology (IET) , a journey filled with valuable learning and has significantly enhanced my understanding of the electronics manufacturing industry 💫 👩💻 During my time here, l had the opportunity to work on assembly of components for Vidiem PCBs, Vak SMPS and CBU Timer PCBs, which allowed me to develop a range of skills, including: Surface Mount technology (SMT) where the electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a PCB and Through-hole-Techology(THT) which is done manually. Pre-forming: Pre-forming of resistors, diodes, LEDs are done to align with the PCB layout before soldering to ensure components fits seamlessly into place, optimizing assembly efficiency and reliability. Soldering and Assembly: Gaining hands on experience with soldering components and assembling PCBs. Testing and Debugging: Learning techniques for testing PCBs and identifying and fixing any issues. Understanding the manufacturing process: Gaining insights into the various stages of PCB manufacturing. I extended my heartful thanks to Mr.Venkatesan Kuppusamy sir and Mr.Sankaradoss sir for their unwavering support and guidance.
