Materiality in Design: Exploring Textures, Finishes, and Three-Dimensional Effects Materiality is a fundamental aspect of design, encompassing textures, finishes, and three-dimensional effects that define the physicality and character of objects and spaces. But what exactly is materiality, and why is it important in design? At its core, materiality refers to the inherent qualities and properties of materials used in design. It encompasses not only the tangible aspects such as color, texture, and weight but also the emotional and sensory responses they evoke. From the smoothness of polished marble to the roughness of reclaimed wood, each material carries its own narrative and visual language, shaping our perception of the objects and environments around us. Textures play a crucial role in materiality, adding depth, interest, and tactility to surfaces. Whether it's the grain of leather, the weave of fabric, or the pattern of embossed metal, textures engage our senses and invite interaction. They can evoke associations with natural elements or cultural references, infusing design with layers of meaning and significance.

Every item used in a facility must comply with the industry's requirements. In this case, only a Class A, fire-rated fabric could be used. As designers, we are educated on code requirements and always look for beautiful items that meet those requirements.
