This past week, our interns reviewed their first quarter achievements, progress, and performance. This gave our interns a chance to look back and look ahead. Our mentors have emphasized the importance of not only receiving feedback from others, but self-evaluating and assessing our current progress. Self-evaluation allows for personal reflection and what we can do to improve moving forward. Taking the time to review our work helps us stay aligned with our goals and ensures that we are consistently moving in the right direction. Given an evaluation metrics form, our interns reflected on different areas of their projects: scoping, planning, problem solving, execution, and innovative thinking. Insight: What useful knowledge did you gain from using these self-evaluation metrics?

Our interns are back this year a bit better and a bit more experienced.  They've already shown growth since they started last year. We've witnessed them becoming more comfortable around our team and at ease with the tasks and projects assigned.  Of course, this is due to the fact that our interns aren't there to fetch coffee (they're still struggling with the coffee machine sometimes). They've grown enough to contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ways of doing things. It's inspiring to see how they've progressed from knowing litle about our work to confidently suggesting new ways to approach challenges.  Sometimes, they're really not in the mood to learn, and that's okay. After feeling the weight of the school year, not evey day will be your best day.  But most of the time, they're happy to get things done.  If you're about to work with young interns for the first time - here's a tip: use familiar analogies and real-world examples in their training. Relate teachings to video games, nights out with friends, or hobbies and interests.  It's fun to see how their faces just light up when you mention a movie they like 👀 What tasks will our interns do this year? Going out to see a show is a magic trick. When it works well, it is all based on the things you don't notice – how you come into the room and feel welcomed, how the bartender is there to take your drink order, how the sound dialed in and the band ready to go. Like a magician palming a coin, there is all the work you don't see, by the door and bar staff, the technicians and roadies, the, back of house and production staff who got you to the show, the artists who worked and traveled to be in the room. But unlike pulling a rabbit out of a hat, nothing about this experience is an illusion. It is all real, human, and transformative. Being in a room with people when the first notes hit, when everybody is singing along, when laughter circles the room, that is the realest thing possible, whether a dozen or ten thousand people are there. It is how we come together to understand each other, to build community and talent, and to find release and relief from the world. It's no secret that it has been a banner year for the hugest acts in the music and entertainment industry, but also a hard year for any small businesses that rely on people coming together, from local retail, to restaurants, to clubs, bars, and venues that are the lifeblood of local live entertainment. And there's nothing wrong with wanting a showstopping moment of wonder, but there is so much everyday magic to experience in the small and independent spaces in our communities. That is my wish for all of us in 2024 – lots of magic and wonder, lots of building and connecting in the places that are close to us, lots of success and strengthening our whole communities. That’s what we’re working to do at NIVF - National Independent Venue Foundation, and we don’t do it alone. Here's to the future.

Next week marks six months for me as 826NYC's Executive Director, and one of the recurring cautions development folks shared with me when I started was about the "summer slump." If you're not familiar with non-profit fundraising, it tends to run in seasons. Winter is end-of-year giving season. Spring and fall are events seasons. And summer—at least for fundraising—is the dreaded season. But it doesn't have to be. As an educator, I know just how important summer is for our students and our work. While fundraising may fall quiet, our programs do not pause. They do not slump. In fact, they soar. This summer, 826NYC's elementary school camp provides crucial opportunities for young people to learn, create, build social emotional skills, get outside, play, and make connections with one another. 826NYC also runs a robust internship opportunity for high school students to mentor younger students, create unique writing projects, engage in daily professional development, and build their resumes.
