🐥 What does the birth of a #retailmedianetwork look like? In the past few years 💯's of Retail Media Networks (RMNs) have been born. Yes, even several hundreds according to my friends over at mimbi - Retail Media Intelligence! They come in many forms and shapes, but let's focus on the ones born at the retailer for its own "banners", rather than the big shiny platforms and alliances. I often repost #retailmedia job adverts from people in my network. But I haven't once seen one advertising a "Head of Retail Media". Of course not! They are the key to the magic 🧙♂️, the wizards that will make it happen, the ones who recruit the others. So I am guessing they are headhunted and handpicked most of the time. They go by the titles of Retail Media Director or VP of Media Monetization, or Retail Media Lead or maybe Head of Special Ops 😉 💰 SALES & MARKETING Some of the first people they hire for their organization are Sales people. A lot of the success depends on the 💲💲💲. But in a retail organization, B2B Sales rarely existed before Retail Media came around! It was all about B2B Purchasing and B2C Sales. This is one of the reasons many retail media networks initially rely on external sales functions, sometimes provided by their adtech partners. But sooner or later, the RMN needs its own sales reps and biz devs. They are going to need some marketing folks too. 🛠 OPERATIONS & DATA Another key area of the organisation is delivery. Defining, setting up, running, optimizing and reporting on campaigns. It is rarely all automated, and even if it is, you may need someone to get more out of your campaign setup. The roles in this part of the organisation can be called Ad Ops or Client Success managers, or even Account Managers. And their best friend is the Data Girl (I was going to say guy, but I resisted). She is the one who works on things such as audience segments, attribution and incrementality and when advertisers ask complex questions, she saves the day. Her job title will be Data Scientist or CRM Specialist or maybe Data and Analytics manager. 💻 PRODUCT & IT A Product Manager or Product Owner also comes as an early hire. Their role will be to define the offering on the basis of the technical capability and advertiser requirements. It may be a surprise to many, but IT is rarely a part of the RMN scope despite the total dependence on digital platforms. RMN platforms are strongly intervowen with corporate IT, existing technology platforms and external Adtech and therefore the Product management becomes the key requirement, and the scope for IT to be included becomes too vast. I've tried to describe some of the key roles in a Retail Media Network. They start out as structures of a handful of people and mature into organisations of 30-50 people sometimes more.
