How can leaders help employees understand enough context to understand the company strategy? the authors offer three recommendations: ➡ 1) Present the rejected alternatives 🔴 🔴 Note how prominently the word “not” features. 🔶 Pharma firm Roche similarly places its decision to focus on prescription medicines and diagnostics in context by highlighting their decision not to invest in alternative sectors such as generics, biosimilars, over-the-counter medicines, and medical devices. ➡ 2. This is disappointing and unsurprising. Corporate boardrooms and head offices that believe they can outsmart and outplan reality, or spreadsheet their way to victory, are missing the point of having teams on the front lines. This is a relic of the achievement-oriented, machinistic paradigm of an organization. Treat everyone like cogs in the machine and the machine will produce what we tell it to. Except, people aren't machines. When we take away a person's autonomy and judgment, we're also taking away everything that makes having a human in the role valuable. Metrics can be a terrible achievement. The most evolved organizations recognize this, and build adaptive organizations made up of self-managed, informed teams with healthy communication and information flows. In these organizations, in which I would include many independent pharmacies, the teams are intimately familiar with their evolving purpose to serve (patients in this case) and the implications for running the organization (the profit incentive). They adapt to the needs of the patient/customer/client and build stronger organizations through responsiveness, which naturally leads to improving profit. It's not fiction. We see it work all the time. But if you're looking at the front line of any organization, and it looks like people are unmotivated to do what management wants - there is a good chance that what management wants is misaligned with what customers need.
