Early on in founding Evolving Minds, I got the message that we would not be funded. There are so many legal, monetary, and accounting barriers: needing 501 c 3 status, a fiscal sponsor, minimum or maximum budgets, independent audits, to be at least three years old, not operating as a start-up, financial statements, and plenty more bulleted lists on websites that make it difficult to succeed, not just as a young professional, but for anyone trying to start a nonprofit. This Saturday, I am co-presenting at the Active Minds, Inc. National Conference with two other incredible young leaders (Aliza Lopez & Arthy Suresh) on a newfound passion of mine: making philanthropy more accessible for young leaders. Quick tip for funders: To support young founders, reduce application burdens, eliminate strict eligibility requirements, and offer young leader-specific grants. In addition, create transparent application processes that clearly articulate from start to finish how to successfully secure funding. If you don’t know where to begin on that, I can help you!
