5 Generations In The Workforce Being a Gen Xer in the workforce for over 40 years I am curious to hear what all of you out there have to say about what you have observed about each generation you have encountered in the workforce. Personally, I am most interested in your observations within the retail industry. Retail is a great place to see the different dynamics brought to the workplace by each generation and how they can compliment or conflict with each other based on exposure to each generation’s learning style, needs and strongest skill sets. The best way to create a growing cohesive team within a retail environment in my perspective, would be to have training with all 5 generations combined as well as monthly meetings with representatives from each generation sharing their respective ideas for ways to improve productivity and cohesion between generations and ways to optimize the plethora of experience collectively provided. How many of you out there are in a working environment that you feel provides the opportunity to productively mesh the skills and experiences of all generations in their work environment? How has your workplace optimized the different strengths each generation has and integrated all 5 generations to be an effective cohesive team? Employee appreciation is good but it doesn’t mean much if it’s not genuine. Employees need an uninterrupted R&R break from work whether it’s the weekend or a vacation. In other words avoid scheduling meetings or training during time off, especially if employee works evenings or nights. A little consideration of employees off time goes a long way.
