Excellent article. Interested in hearing from my network about funding and training opportunities to support women of color (woc) in leadership positions. Also interested in learning about bipoc/woc support groups centered on the same. This week Remi Clare and I had the opportunity to attend the EDIS (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Science and Health) symposium on Inclusive Leadership at The Francis Crick Institute along with a group of other Wellcome Sanger Institute staff including Cybele Fernandes Saher Ahmed Burcu Bronner-Anar Lorenzo Mazza David Nicholson Lizzy Thorpe. Our two biggest takeaways were: 1) Representative leadership isn’t enough. We need to move toward a position where people aren’t all treated the same (they may need different things) but they are valued the same and the actions of organisations reflect this. 2) EDI isn’t just ticking a box. We need to be doing more to raise awareness of the challenges faced by all of our staff, and to promote a movement towards inclusive leadership.

The MS in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership seeks to ensure that individuals in DEI roles can thrive based on their expertise and capabilities rather than solely on their social identity. Growing up every 6 weeks I would spend a Saturday at Mor’ Hair Salon. Those Saturdays required a lot of patience and at the end of the appointment I would leave with a style which was a version of what I desired! I struggled with speaking up. As I have stepped into leadership roles I’ve had to learn how to self-advocate. There are real realities I’ve had to consider like being mislabeled or misunderstood. What I am realizing is speaking up is about articulating and honoring your needs. Showing up as women who lead with authenticity spurs us to think more deeply about self-advocacy. Today, as we honor Juneteenth, we recognize our nation's progress and — perhaps more importantly — the work still ahead. It's been four years since the largest civil rights protests in U.S. history, and three since this date was declared a federal holiday by President Joe Biden. Yet, despite many companies offering Juneteenth as a day off and continued disparities in the workforce (and beyond), #DEI efforts are increasingly sidelined in the corporate world, and DEI leaders are often the first to face job cuts as companies rethink their budgets and the spotlight moves away from what they once claimed were critical priorities. Now is not the time to reduce our focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. Instead, it’s THE moment to double down on our commitment to creating equitable workplaces. As DEI Leadership Institute CEO Maria Putnam said at our 2023 Annual Conference, “We aim to create a more conscious, engaged, and active DEI community through the cultivation and sharing of ideas, as well as creating spaces of belonging. This mission has never been more important.” That message still resonates deeply today. At the DEI Leadership Institute, we see this as a unique opportunity to unite under a common mission and drive meaningful change. When Eric Guyer was Director Of Community Justice in Jackson County, he invited Celebrate Diversity! to provide Cultural Agility training to his staff. Here are some of his comments about the impact of our collaboration: "We wanted to take a deeper dive to understand our community better, for our staff to comprehend how people have experienced the criminal justice system, and provide opportunities for dialogue. We were familiar with your approach and professionalism and wanted to go beyond awareness to shifts and openings in attitudes and disposition.
