Anyone else try to call Police for a dispatch lately? As part of our SOPs with customers we will routienly need to call the local police dispatch for Video Verified Incidents. But recently I have had to discuss response times with our customers. Depending on the part of the country, the incident, the time of day we may get a slow response or we may get no response at all. This is becoming much more of a problem. Discussing with a customer today who brought up the Alameda Police department because of their ambitious sign on bonus program! They are short 30% of the officers they need. In a era where Law Enforcement Agencies nationwide are facing a hiring/retention crisis, we as a profession must constantly re-evaluate our recruitment and hiring practices to ensure that they are meeting our needs are are still relevant. Re-evaluating the recruitment and hiring process does not mean lowering standards for selection, it means look at ways to make the hiring process more streamlined and attractive to new recruits and lateral applicants. A review of what the Aurora (IL) Police Department is doing can provide other agencies with insights and lesions learned to help address the issue. Law Enforcement leaders must realize that the hiring process, like life, is never static and that change must take place occasionally to ensure their agencies practices stay relevant. However, any change needs to be good change and not change for the sake of change. Law enforcement agencies across the United States are experiencing a significant increase in staffing since 2020. According to recent Police Executive Research Forum survey, many departments have resorted to increased salaries, hiring bonuses, and changing testing protocols to attract more applicants. However, the biggest factor contributing to this trend is the perception of the job and support from the community and elected officials. This positive trend is crucial to ensuring the safety and security of our communities. If the recruiting and retention crisis in law enforcement is not addressed, we unfortunately may see an increased number of smaller agencies disbanding due to the lack of personnel. Jurisdictions would then either look at either consolidated police services between multiple jurisdictions or the sheriff/state police taking over police services. Consolidated or contract police services are often cheaper and your jurisdiction might be policed by a larger agency. While the larger department might allow for more specialized Officers, the service they provide may not always be better, often it is less personalized to your communities concerns/cares, and the jurisdiction might end up with less people who actively patrol and police their jurisdiction. Since the founding of the Untied States, small town policing has been the American style of policing. As of 2002 this still holds true with approximately 86.9% of law enforcement agencies being 50 full time Officers and below (73.5% less than 25) and 85.2% of agencies serving a population under 25,000. While not always perfect, the American style of policing has been more innovative, creative, and impactful than nearly any other nations style of policing the last 120 years.
