When it comes to ‘climate-conscious’ behaviours, a new poll suggests the over-65s are leading the way in the UK. Our new research for our Climate-Ready Index has found that people in this age group are the most likely to: ♻️ Recycle 💡 Turn off lights in empty rooms  🖥️ Choose energy-efficient appliances Ian is 76 and lives in west Scotland. He’s also the dad of a member of our media relations team 😊: “We have chosen to live in the remote peninsula of Knoydart, which has a water-powered turbine electrical system which covers the village. It is 60 years old and produces all the electricity for our community. We have no means of any kind of gas, electric or water.   “We collect our groceries from the daily ferry and we recycle into skips which accept bottles, paper, plastic and general waste, recycling as much as possible. This includes composting for the market garden.   “I was brought up in the make do and mend generation. For example, kilt jackets and coats have been in our family for several generations. ⚠ ILLEGAL BURN-OFF REPORTS ON THE RISE IN VIC ⚠ Illegal burn-offs of industrial waste including treated timber, plastics and tyres appear to be on the rise. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) Executive Director Operations Mark Rossiter says the number of reports for 2023 (88) is already above the two-year (2021 and 2022) average of 84. “Everyone has a role in protecting the environment. It is no secret that burning industrial waste is illegal. Rest assured those who are caught doing so will be held to account," says Rossiter. Nationally, we also see the impacts of illegal dumping, stockpiling and rogue waste operators in our local communities - taking up more time and money for councils and ratepayers to deal with. While Australia can be proud of the close to 90% of passenger, bus and truck tyres the nation recovers, the remaining 10% gap (which equates to 5.7 million passenger tyres not being recovered each year) is still an unacceptable eco-hazard. Last week colleagues from our Business Development team met with Jon Ward from Wascle Waste Solutions, in order to inform our customers of smarter ways to recycle and dispose of waste.
