What makes this magnet school’s recent changes in admissions policy worth considering is how it addresses a commitment to providing equity in education access while taking disparate impact into consideration. Over reliance on Standardized tests favors students who do well in those tests, which also tends to give them access to better education, resulted in disparate impact. So the standardized tests were eliminated in favor of the arguably more reliable academic achievement measure or gpa. But they did not stop there as their interest is in equitable access. To ensure that, they also selected the top students from schools across the geographical area. That ensured standards remained while reducing the disparate impact. The high court’s conclusion is that those benefiting from the old admissions policy were not adequately harmed under the new policy to warrant grieving legally. #supremecourt #affirmativeaction #disparateimpact #admissions #policy #magnet #schools #standardizedtests

The Education system should be a priority, not only in NC but across the country. Hundreds of our best educators have left or are on their way out the door. Even more startling, fewer students than ever are enrolled in Colleges of Education nationwide or in NC. Teachers make an impact. They are the foundation of all learning. A career in teaching should earn the highest compensation.

OPINION by Jeff Rice: State education policies should be changed to allow public charter schools with flex-based hybrid programs that operate facilities for instruction to qualify for funding for facilities and after-school programs. Policies should also be changed to allow more students at traditional schools to take part in flexible independent study programs so that they too can benefit from a more tailored and adaptable education program.
Charter schools should be encouraged to offer flexibility for diverse student needs
