Following the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the United Kingdom's dedicated stance was particularly evident in its swift decision-making, exemplified by the provision of advanced weaponry to Kyiv and the expansion of training missions for the Ukrainian armed forces. Furthermore, the UK demonstrated strategic foresight by extending security guarantees to prospective NATO members, Finland and Sweden, and leveraging its diplomatic networks to garner support for a robust Western response. Despite the complexities introduced by Brexit, which formally severed formal ties between the UK and the EU in foreign policy matters, the UK continued to play a central role in shaping European responses, albeit through bilateral engagements and a recalibration of its global identity. The pragmatic approach adopted by successive UK leaders, including Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, has been instrumental in navigating the post-Brexit landscape and promoting renewed engagement with European allies. The Windsor Framework, which addressed Northern Ireland Protocol issues, is a significant milestone, signaling a renewed commitment to deeper UK-EU cooperation in foreign and security policies. As the UK continues to navigate its role post-Brexit, its contribution to Western solidarity remains fundamental, highlighting the resilience of its diplomatic engagement amidst evolving global dynamics. https://lnkd.in/e34fre_F https://lnkd.in/exx8jMJm

💡 FEDERICO FABBRINI FULL PROFESSOR OF EUROPEAN LAW AT DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY got it right! The answer to his question: YES, ABSOLUTELY! #Zeitenwende rather than #Kleinstaaterei and #Nibelungentreue Common defense is the greatest of all challenges faced by the EU today. The war in Ukraine has pitifully exposed the EU’s weaknesses in this domain, and its member states’ reliance on U.S. hard power. Yet, Uncle Sam cannot be taken for granted forever. As the only elected politician with a clear vision for the future of European integration, President Macron has anticipated the challenge, pushing hard to deepen cooperation in military affairs for a time when the EU and NATO no longer have America’s backing. Yet, France’s ideas in defense policy often appear hegemonic and thus they alienate EU partners. To avoid falling into this trap, Macron should come up with a supranational plan. In 1955, France voted down the European Defense Community Treaty. Is it time to resume it? https://lnkd.in/eb5ngVcB

💬 "The EU is preparing for the world of the future, but the new reality is already here on our continent - a war in #Europe supported by Russia and its "friends". The EU must strengthen its defence industrial capabilities, have a plan to defend itself against a wide range of threats, and provide even more support to #Ukraine. First and foremost, maximum military support today," the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Simonas Satunas stressed during the #GAC. ☑️ Vice-Minister participated in the General Affairs Council in Brussels, where representatives of the #EU Member States discussed the agenda of the European Council to be held on 27 and 28 June, discussed the rule of law situation in #Lithuania and in three other EU Member States, and discussed the conclusion of the Article 7 of the EU Treaty procedure against Poland. I am resurfacing an article I co-authored with Ashley Burrell on U.S. leadership on Foreign Policy: Establishing a Caucus on NATO & Transatlantic Security. Our article argues that Congress should establish a bicameral NATO Caucus. The bicameral NATO Caucus would be an excellent coordination and advisory tool to refresh Congress’ institutional understanding of the history of NATO and transatlantic relations. Please read the piece at The National Interest. #NATO #NATOCaucus #Congress #transatlantic #bipartisan

In his latest article, Gauthier Perdereau (Bilski) deep dives into the complex dynamics driving the recent armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. With tensions reminiscent of the 2006 war, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s strategy appears to be leaning towards a similar escalation, despite reservations within the Israeli military. The situation is increasingly precarious, with significant civilian casualties and international concern over the potential for prolonged conflict. Gauthier Perdereau (Bilski) provides an in-depth analysis of this critical issue, emphasizing the need for close attention to the evolving crisis and its potential impact on the future of the Middle East. 👉 Read the full version here: https://lnkd.in/dRftTPCm
