For example, Toronto ranks last for perceived visitor attractions, routinely among the bottom 3 for arts, culture, and dining experience, and in the bottom half for quality of place and amenities. The risk is clear: The areas where global cities increasingly must compete are the areas where Toronto has room for growth. Fortunately, we've got a secret and under-utilised weapon: Our waterfront. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 - 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 Last October, the University of Toronto's School of Cities released a fascinating study on urban recovery post-pandemic. Mississauga led the pack with a 91% recovery in foot traffic, closely followed by Quebec City, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. In a surprising twist, the January 2024 study found that 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗔 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼'𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁, 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗲, 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗕 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀. This shift is partly attributed to the rise of remote work, ESG compliance, and cost-cutting efforts by businesses. Even more intriguing is the hospitality sector's robust recovery. Six out of eight 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝟭𝟬𝟬% 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, indicating a strong resurgence in hotel and related activities. This trend was mirrored nationally, with the occupancy rate returning to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, driven by a surge in leisure travel. 2024 looks promising for Canada's hospitality sector, and major players like Morguard Corporation are already capitalizing on this momentum. They recently divested a portfolio of 14 high-quality hotels. In a separate sale, Toronto’s Hazelton Hotel was sold at the highest price per room ever recorded nationwide in June 2023. Sydney a century from now will be the same but different. The same easygoing people who’ve adapted to new ways of getting around. It will for a long time have been the undisputed preeminent global city in the Asia Pacific region. Fortunately, the designers of the new Sydney Metro “did a John Bradfield” in building vast new stations ready for the next century — and its technology — as well as this one. And stations that are ideal templates for the Metro of the next Millennium with new stations in Newcastle, Gosford, Wollongong, Campbelltown, Camden and Sutherland. Existing Metro tunnels will have been adapted to driverless self-levitating trains barrelling along on a magnetic beam at unbelievable speeds making existing Metro trains seem like lumbering tortoises alongside dashing hairs. Because no one will be more than half-an-hour travel time from anywhere in the Greater Greater Sydney (yes that’s a double Greater), the CBD will again be a magnet for work, retail, entertainment and dining pursuits — the things that never go out of fashion irrespective of the century. Like its counterparts in Paris, London and other great world cities, more people will be living in the centre of our wonderful city injecting vibrancy and excitement that could only be wished for in 2024. And not only will the trains run on time. They’ll run all the time 24 hours a day. Same but different — baristas will still be the heart and soul of the city making bearable the start of any working day. Only 100 years hence, your morning flat white or cap will be ready and waiting as you walk out of the Metro station in 2124. Sydney has emerged as a global leader in rental growth, as per Knight Frank’s Prime Global Cities Index for Q1 2024.
