Did you know that reducing food waste is key to preserving global biodiversity? A recent study quantifies the impact of food waste at different supply chain stages on species loss. In Germany, avoidable food waste leads to the potential loss of 0.3 vertebrate and 1.5 plant species globally, with household waste being the largest contributor at 47%. Policies targeting food services, especially individual catering, could significantly reduce this impact. The study also highlights that animal products from pigs and cattle, particularly affecting amphibians in Brazil, are the most impactful. 🌍 🐞 The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) describes biodiversity as “the diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems, including plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi. These three levels work together to create life on Earth in all its complexity.”  🌱 At ProFound, we see regenerative agriculture and the implementation, management, and creation of sustainable practices as the path forward in agriculture that can also stop biodiversity loss and help nature recover. 🌳 ♨ 👩🌾 One of the projects that comes to mind while commemorating the International Day for Biodiversity is the Tea Garden project we worked with in Sri Lanka some while ago. On that occasion, together with Both ENDS and Rainforest Rescue, we supported a private tea estate and a tea cooperative to produce tea in a forest garden system! Such an exciting project. 🙌 “Together with ProFound, we transformed a tea plantation into a forest garden production (...) providing food and income to communities, improving soils and the quality of the tea.” Shared Ranil Senanayake (Rainforest Rescue International) after the culmination of the project. 🐝 🐛 Over the past thirty years, we’ve worked with farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, non-government organizations, and actors in the value chain who share our beliefs. We are confident that, if action is taken, biodiversity loss can decrease. It's like nature's own version of a blockbuster movie – full of drama, unexpected plot twists, and an incredibly diverse cast of characters! Biodiversity isn't just a buzzword in agroecology; it's the backbone of sustainable farming practices. By embracing a variety of species and genetic resources, we can improve soil health, boost resilience to climate change, and support farming communities around the world. Plus, let's face it, a diverse ecosystem is much more interesting than a monoculture snooze-fest. Today, let's celebrate the vibrant tapestry of life that sustains our planet. Whether you're planting a garden, supporting sustainable agriculture, or just appreciating the natural world, every little bit helps. Happy Biodiversity Day! Critical to establish a #systems framework to #nature and #human #interactions. As the paper shows there are high #biodiversity impact areas where decisions are especially critical. #Tradeoffs between monetized goods and services and non-financial goods and services have to be made explicit. This is why #doublemateriality is so important.

As a regenerative and healing-centred practitioner, I get my inspiration from many sources, and especially from regenerative farming. There is something that is so tangible, earthy and practical about what regenerative farmers are doing in terms of mimicking wild grazing patterns through mob grazing, regenerating depleted soils within just a few years, utilising herbal leys that include plants with long tap roots to help draw up minerals from deep within the soil, increasing bio-diversity that includes plants, invertebrates, funghi, insects, birds and mammals, providing more effective carbon capture and reducing run-off from bare, tilled soils, in some cases completely eliminating reliance on external inputs in terms of feed and fertilisers, producing high quality, nutritious food, rebuilding community and connection to land. So it was a wonderful treat to spend this afternoon at the wonderful Sandy Hill Mob, a farm with 100% pastured eggs and grass fed beef, farmed by Laura and Matthew Elliott. To meet them, the land, their animals and the community that loves them. In the face of huge pressures, if we want to see regenerative agriculture and food systems succeed (in contrast to highly processed, industrial systems that are controlling the supply chain, have poor welfare standards, damaging precious soils through intensive practices and chemical fertilisers), we need to support regenerative farmers wherever we can. We all have to eat of course but our current food system presents a number of sustainability challenges. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) report (and others) referenced in this Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership (CISL) post https://lnkd.in/dCsW3Nrd suggests three key actions: 1 - Changing global dietary patterns by moving to more plant heavy diets. 2 - Protecting, and producing more food on, existing (or less) land supporting the setting aside of land for nature. 3 - Farming in a more nature-friendly and biodiversity-supporting way.
