This week, Victoria University, in collaboration with the Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria and the Islamic Council of Victoria, launched their comprehensive and vital report, "Understanding Reporting Barriers and Support Needs for Those Experiencing Racism in Victoria," at the Reading Room of the Fitzroy Town Hall. We are proud to embrace and celebrate our diverse community and their contributions to the culture and identity of Yarra. We stand with our community and remain committed to working with our diverse community to understand their needs and experiences, and to taking action to end racism in all its forms.

ECCV was pleased to be part of the launch today of an important new report, which looks at ways to improve reporting pathways and support services for Victorians who experience racism. Startlingly, the report found that the vast majority of racist incidents in our state go unreported. The ‘Understanding reporting barriers and support needs for those experiencing racism in Victoria’ report is the result of a research project led by Victoria University Associate Professor Mario Peucker in collaboration with ECCV and the Islamic Council of Victoria, with support from Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth). ECCV Deputy Co-Chair Gabrielle Marchetti addressed the launch, describing the report as a "vital catalyst for change" and calling on decision-makers to put the report's recommendations into action. This was echoed by ICV President Adel Salman who emphasised the need for urgent action on anti-racism, especially at a systemic and institutional level. We also heard from one of the report's co-authors Franka Vaughan, PhD as well as responses to the report from Andrew Gardner of Victoria Police, Celia Chang of Hume City Council, Victoria University Professor Khalid Moinuddin, representatives of the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission as well as community leaders Mursha Dalay-on, PhD of Foundation House Victoria (VFST Inc.) and Mubarek Imam of Young Assets Foundation Inc. Thank you to Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Tony Garvey for generously welcoming us to Country, and Amani Nyikang from Yarra City Council for facilitating this morning's thought-provoking event.
