Each year in Yarra, we come together to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements during #NAIDOCWeek. 🖤💛❤️ This year, we’re also encouraging our community to support the path to Treaty in Victoria by engaging with organisations like the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria and Yoorrook Justice Commission. There’s plenty of local NAIDOC celebrations to get involved in this week, including a Family Day at Collingwood Children's Farm presented by Aboriginal Housing Victoria, Victorian Aboriginal Health Service's Annual NAIDOC march and Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO)’s NAIDOC Week celebration. "Character cannot be developed through ease and peace. Only through temptations and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision clarified, ambition inspired and success achieved." In the words of Helen Adams Keller, a well-known deaf-mute American writer and activist for the rights of persons with disabilities, we would like to express how honored and pleased we were to respond to the invitation of the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina and actively participate in the promotion of the Guidelines for Improving Everyday Communication with Persons with Disabilities, thereby confirming the commitment and readiness of the Široki Brijeg County Court to participate in the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities. If you are a non-indigenous Australian, imagine that another nation invaded us tomorrow, and that half of us died from diseases introduced by that nation's soldiers, and that after defeating us (often through brutal massacres) that other nation repopulated the country and we became a minority, forced to live under their political system. Imagine further that we were herded into camps where we were forced to speak only their language, that many of our children were taken from us against our will and that we were systematically discriminated against. Imagine further that, after we have been forced to live under this political system for several hundred years, a more moderate government expresses willingness to change their constitution to have an ongoing structured dialogue about the future of our people. How would you feel if the majority population rejected this proposal on the basis that it was divisive?

Living and working on Kaurna land. Digital ethics evangelist, public policy practitioner, strategist, writer, speaker.
Listening carefully to many views during this campaign, I’ve come to believe that most Australians want to do the right thing by our First Nations, but between the comfort of the no campaign’s invitation to remain ignorant, and marketing that makes it look like Aboriginal and Torres Strait people are highly divided on this issue, it’s hard to know what the right thing is. Voting is a deeply personal matter and when we vote, it’s between us and our conscience. But because this is so important to me, I’m sharing why I’m voting yes: YES because I’ve directly heard from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for over 2 decades through my work that they want recognition as First Nations and self-determination. YES because this is a fair request and a good way to make policy - ‘nothing about us without us’ is the principle in disability and ageing - why not in First Nations policy too? YES because there is nothing to fear and everything to gain. (The opposite means more of the same failures to redress history and more of the same gaps.)

Our constitution establishes all the principles for our government, defining its structure, powers, and the relationship between the states and the federal government. Every constitutional change is about principles. For this referendum we are being asked if you agree or disagree with the following principle of whether Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders people should be recognised as the first people of Australia and whether they should have a Voice to parliament and the executive government. This is a simple change. If successful, what follows is the mechanism and the legislation to implement the change. All of which is done by our federal parliament. These legislated arrangements, powers, functions and procedures can be changed by our parliament anytime in the future. As things evolve or circumstances change then parliament can legislate to reflect them. But the principles of recognition and a voice will remain. I will be voting Yes and suggest you vote along the lines of what your personal principles align with. #Yes23

At the end of 2023, there were at least 2.3 million migrants in Canada (undocumented people, those on work or study permits and refugee claimants). They comprise nearly 10% of all agricultural and fishery workers and 5% of the accommodation and food service force. Migrants are not taking jobs that Canadians don’t want or where there are labour shortages - they are in jobs because some employers want an exploitable workforce, and denial of permanent resident status makes them more vulnerable to abuse (Migrants Rights Network). Equal rights to undocumented immigrants! <3 https://lnkd.in/gw-XRpVs

This is important. More than 80% of First Nations people want to be recognised in the constitution with a Voice to parliament. It’s simply wrong to suggest that a majority of indigenous people are against the proposal. Yes, this request has come from a long consultation process. It’s true that some indigenous Australians are against it, and are calling for treaty first. But the vast majority support establishing the voice as the first step of reconciliation and recognition. They ask for the Voice to be enshrined in the constitution so that it can’t be abolished like so many other advisory bodies before it. It’s a simple change. It’s a safe change. It’s a meaningful change. Vote YES to change the constitution in the referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the First Nations people of Australia by giving them a voice to parliament on matters that affect them. We have nothing to lose, and so much to gain. #Yes23 #UluruStatement

How do truth-telling processes contribute to reconciling Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians? Vanessa Barolsky presented her investigations into local truth-telling initiatives currently emerging around the country. Combining qualitative and Indigenous research methods, she documented 25 community-driven truth telling initiatives, which collectively demonstrate extraordinary perseverance among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, often working with scarce resources. Some of the initiatives include: 🌏 Repatriation 🗣 Renaming 🔥Commemoration events 🎆 Public artworks 🖤 Healing sites Her findings highlight the need for reckoning with Australia’s violent colonial past. She also addresses the potential for non-Indigenous Australians to contribute towards truth-telling initiatives, with potential benefit for all Australians. You can watch her presentation at the recent Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies (CRIS) consortium here: https://lnkd.in/gPe_HhDV If you would like to learn more about the research, you can follow this link: The Role of Truth-telling in Australian Reconciliation: Addressing a colonial legacy<br/> — Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies (crisconsortium.org)
