Command staff and supervisors, like April Switala have the power to cultivate a workplace culture that prioritizes the well-being, Emotional Intelligence (EI), and engagement of their departments. By adopting a positive approach, they focus on the development of emotional literacy and coping skills, as advocated by Tehrani (2022). Jason M. Palamara and I recognize the importance of emotional literacy, which is a profound comprehension of emotions coupled with the ability to articulate feelings. This forms the cornerstone of EI and entails recognizing and understanding emotions and possessing the skills to express them effectively. In the realm of law enforcement, where the challenges are both mental and emotional, cultivating emotional literacy becomes pivotal. Emotional intelligence (EI) enables law enforcement professionals to assert control over the mental challenges inherent in their profession. In turn, officers are empowered to make well-informed, safe decisions, nurture healthy relationships, and sustain resilience in the face of the demanding nature of their duties (Laura, et al., 2016). Promoting emotional literacy and coping skills becomes a catalyst for fortifying the mental fortitude of law enforcement professionals, fostering a work environment that not only acknowledges the emotional toll of the job but actively equips individuals with the competence needed to navigate and thrive amidst these challenges. EI represents a repertoire of skills that empower them to regulate emotions effectively. This involves accurately perceiving and expressing emotions and extends to skillful management of the emotions of others. Despite the limited attention afforded to EI in police research studies, Magny and Todak’s (2021) examination revealed a noteworthy connection between an officer’s EI and job satisfaction and well-being. #suicideprevention #suicideawareness #emotionalintelligence #vicarioustrauma #lawenforcementtraining

It's crucial to reflect on the consequences of policy decisions, especially in sensitive areas like school safety. In Florida, the implementation of the "Guardian Program" sparked concerns about arming civilians in schools. Despite reservations voiced by school safety advocates, politicians pursued this approach to pass an arming teachers bill. However, recent developments highlight a potential issue: the ease of replacing well-trained School Resource Officers with armed civilians. July 24, 2024 Riverhead BOE approves plan to bring resource officers to schools Is this a trend? Riverhead is in Long Island where I’m from. Is anything similar taking place elsewhere (and if so, with what effect)? “The Riverhead School Board has approved school resource officers in the high school and middle school, beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.” https://lnkd.in/gFZEvBH3 By the way, the school resource officers (SRO) “will be able to carry weapons. The decision of whether they will openly carry, or conceal them will be made by the Riverhead chief of police.” They are police officers employed by the Riverhead Police Department. Reportedly, they will be stationed inside the school five days a week. Although not too clear in the article what they will be doing, more details were provided in the Long Island News 12 broadcast and far more below; likely better than proposals I’ve seen elsewhere in the country planning to arm teachers. The officers will wear uniforms to enhance visibility. I’ve no doubt that some incidents in Long Island this past school year sparked the attention of the Board of Education to seek increased security in schools, but, as well, we’ve seen a flurry of school mass shootings, and here we are about 6 weeks away from the start of another school year when many parents all over the country will be voicing their concerns about the safety of their children. On June 24, 2020, the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) school board unanimously voted to remove the Oakland School Police Department from all campuses. Replacing them were former School Security Officers (SSOs) rebranded as Culture Keepers. With an eye on the uptick in violence on OUSD campuses that followed, Coron Brinson, a past BTP Fellow, #BlackTeacher, school leader, and doctoral candidate asks, “Protection from what?” and “Safety for who?”— two key questions we’re all asking about policing in schools. With the police response to those in mental health crisis coming increasingly under focus, Brunel University London’s Amy E.veritt, and Dr Dr Cody Porter and Dr Paul Gavin from University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol, highlight the key elements of a new multi-agency training approach held at Brunel University earlier this year, providing real-world immersive scenarios as well as expert insight for frontline emergency responders. ❝This new and immersive training event aimed to explore the ‘new landscape’ for students from the police and health sector, with the intention of creating a more collaborative approach to mental health crises.❞ ❝Police delegates took the lead here, many instinctively positioning themselves as a barrier between the actor and the other delegates. Some of the policing delegates took a ‘fact-finding’ approach, trying to establish information for an appropriate risk assessment.❞ ❝Nicky Perfect BEM-Author, Trainer, Speaker, the former Deputy Head of the New Scotland Yard Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Unit, spoke of the need to walk along with someone in crisis and not challenge their belief systems.❞ ❝Having more training like this would improve how emergency workers safeguard the most vulnerable in the communities. Policies, procedures, and processes are focuses of change, as is the need for improving data and modernizing technology.
