I have 4 stories that kind of capture the current zeitgeist of the city management profession. ➡️Duncan, OK (pop. 23,000) Chris Deal has spent the last 13+ years leading the Duncan Chamber of Commerce. He has no previous experience in local government. He was just tapped to become the next city manager for Duncan (link: https://lnkd.in/eUVKsxcn) ➡️ Meadowlakes, TX (pop. 1,900) They tried doing an in-house recruitment for city manager and offered $90-120,000. The results were lackluster. They are now spending $20,000 to hire a recruiter. I am not trying to denigrate anyone. I am simply illustrating time and time again that the market for city managers is wide open. There is so much opportunity. How many of you reading my posts continue to ignore the realities of this market? How many of you continue to tell yourselves that you aren't good enough or that you don't deserve to level up your careers? It is healthy and normal to have self-doubt. It is healthy and normal to be scared. Do not let your fears and self-doubt sabotage you. It is part of the journey. Now -- go out and get them to sign on the line which is dotted! ----- If you are an aspiring city manager -- you should strongly consider joining the American Association of Municipal Executives as a founding member. I am delighted to finally share a glimpse into the powerful work of our network of partners across the country! This video highlights the perspective of some amazing humans leading and experiencing restorative justice diversion programs. In these programs, participants are invited to deeply explore a set of questions that look very different from the questions asked by the criminal legal system. Instead of focusing on what law was broken and how we punish the person that broke it, restorative justice recognizes that what is elevated as a crime is not always an accurate reflection of the harm caused or a directive on what is needed to make things right. Restorative justice starts with the questions: What happened? Who was harmed and what do they need? Whose obligation is it to repair the harm and meet those needs? Furthermore, these programs address unmet needs that may have led someone to cause harm. By asking questions like “Who else has been impacted by this harm? What are the root causes? and What is needed to address those root causes and prevent further harm?” We delve into the restorative justice process, aiming not only to repair harm but also to sow transformative seeds that lead to deeper relationships and meaningful accountability.
