To make the world a less 💩 place. My daily aspiration as a UX practitioner.
Kyle Chayka, staff writer for the New Yorker so accurately describes the enshittification of products and “corporation centered design.”This is such a common pattern now in product/platform strategy. It’s the norm. I can almost envision what those enshittification meetings are like.

I've spoken to literally 1000s of prospective clients over the years. What's the one piece of advice I would give them at the beginning of a new experiential project? Before you choose your design, strategy, and production team or teams... Consider your internal resources. #projectmanagement #designproduction #experiencedesign

Timing is a funny thing. In almost every aspect of life, timing greatly influences the outcome and how we afterwards perceive what happened. So here is a joke: What is the most important thing in comedy? Two months ago, I decided to vacate my role as Head of Enterprise and Domain Architecture. For the past four and half years I have worked to steer the company’s It Architecture in a direction that suited the strategic direction. Being Enterprise Architecture is never an easy job, the short term vs. long term, strategic diffusion, strong opinions in a large enterprise etc. When you do everything right nobody notices because the benefits a reaped in the future, and when you struggle it is often the consequence of the decisions years ago. But I always enjoyed those kinds of challenges, it is par for the course as an EA and especially for the head of EA. But I also enjoy progress, we must be better every day, it is sort of the heartbeat of EA, where the sense advancement is not seen in monumental deliveries, but a steady grinding towards a vision. When that grinding slows down and lack of progress stops, my personal satisfaction for the job also withers. At that point it is time to ponder, because many things can be wrong. The EA can have a wrong perception of the vision, and the organization is resisting because of it, the EA can have the right idea, but the organization is not in agreement, and it could be there is no vision and no way the gauge if we are progressing. Finally, it could just be me, and that a different person may see things more clearly. Over the course of many months, I have had constructive discussions on mine and others perception of the problem. But ultimately back in late February, I decided that I could not feel the heartbeat anymore, and perhaps more importantly my idea what was wrong at the time, was not something I could do anything about. So, I chose to step away. .....Timing. I will spare you the usual platitudes of LinkedIn. My info is up to date, do reach out.

Coining ‘enshittification’ is a good first step towards righting the ship. Now we can accurately describe the issue

Wrapping up my first project as an independent program evaluation consultant! It was a serendipitous project as just days after refreshing my membership with the MN Evaluation Association, the Austin Area Arts Center reached out for evaluation services for both their Emerging Artist Program and ArtWorks Festival. They have been a wonderful team to work with throughout the whole project. The goals of the project were straight forward: 1) Re-design existing survey tools for both the ArtWorks Festival and Emerging Artist Program that were culturally sensitive, equity focused and transformative in nature to allow for actionable program and event improvements. 2) Develop a storytelling interview guide and training for the Emerging Artist Program Mentor (more to come with a highlight reel and promo video). 2) Use the results from the data analysis to help support future funding and grant applications. 3) Create fun and engaging data visualizations for post festival communications. Reach out if you want to learn more about my program evaluation consulting services or if you want to muse over the pros and cons of various data collection methods...

No matter what you do, please take a look- I'd love your feedback! My team and I have put together a webpage that aims to be something we can point to when people ask us what we do. It's also somewhere we'd like to share our work with other designers or those in local authority who do similar work. Is the content easy to understand? What sections or details would you like to see more of, or think are missing? If you're in a similar role or field, do you find our work relatable or helpful?
