Challenge 2: Brew Responsibly! ☕ Canadians love their coffee, but let's ditch the disposable cups! Try these tips: ▪️Bring a reusable cup from home to your favourite coffee shop ▪️Take your home-brewed coffee or hot beverage on-the-go in your favourite reusable mug ▪️If they don’t already, ask your coffee shop to offer reusable mugs for drinking in-store, or to fill reusable mugs brought from home ▪️If you must use a single-use cup, avoid using a plastic lid and dispose of the cup according to your local waste programs #earthmonth2024 #beatplasticpollution

Fun Fact Friday! Did you know, that in the United Kingdom, 7 million disposable coffee cups are used each day, which equates to 2.5 billion per year. This is enough to wrap around the Earth five and a half times. 😬 The majority of disposable coffee cups end up in landfills or as litter, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose. This is because they are difficult to recycle due to their plastic lining, which is hard to separate from the paper. In the UK, only 0.25% of disposable coffee cups are recycled. To reduce waste, many coffee shops encourage customers to bring their own cups. Blick Rothenberg are currently coming to the end of a two-week Couch to Carbon Zero initiative where we are all encouraged to revisit some of the everyday habits and decisions that we make, to consider how we can reduce our individual and collective carbon footprints whilst taking steps towards increased sustainability. Opening the cupboards in our kitchens this week, we were welcomed by our own Blick Rothenberg branded reusable drinks cups. In providing these, we are encouraged to continue our support towards local coffee shops (my shout out to Redemption Roasters and The Black Penny in particular) and offering us the chance to step outside the office for a while, whilst making a small reduction to the 7 million disposable cups that are currently used every day. It’s often the little things, the small steps that together can make a difference….what are you doing to help?

While many of us do our best to bring a reusable coffee cup to work, we can forget from time to time. 🙃 So if, on the rare occasion, you're ordering a coffee that comes in a cup destined for the bin, remember to throw it out correctly 💪 Coffee cup lids are recyclable, however most coffee cups in Australia are not designed to be recycled. Be sure to check the label on the side of the cup for directions ☕ The best thing you can do is keep a reusable cup at work. You only need to use it 17 times to offset the energy used to make it 💪 #QueenslandEnvironment

🥤🚫 Western Australia has become the first state to ban single-use, non-compostable coffee cups. So what does that mean for small businesses? Here's the gist: businesses in WA need to phase out problematic single-use takeaway items, including certain types of coffee cups and sushi trays. If they don't, they face fines of up to $25,000. This is the town of Petaluma. Its in California, USA. Why is it significant? Well, it has just launched what is believed to be USA’s first citywide reusable cup program. This being with the aim to reduce plastic usage, and landfill waste. 30 restaurants and coffee shops in Petaluma will serve and accept deposits of multi-use beverage cups, including major chains such as Starbucks, Taco Bell and Dunkin' Donuts. Once you have had your drink, the cups can be dropped off in special bins across town. They are then collected, cleaned, ready for re-use. It will be interesting to see how this pilot project works, and whether it can be extended to larger cities. The people behind the project described how "One cup doesn’t consume a massive amount of resources to produce and dispose, but when thousands of cups are used daily... that waste accumulates in a significant way."   We’ll keep in touch with this program and see what success they achieve. Did you know less than 1% of disposable coffee cups are recycled in the UK?🥤 A report by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee estimates that approximately 2.5 billion (not million!) disposable coffee cups are used in the UK alone every year (with the figure likely to be even higher). This staggering number against the small percentage of cups being recycled is highly concerning. Fortunately, the solution is fairly simple - switch to a reusable cup and more importantly, use it!  Apart from saving more disposable cups from going to landfill, you can also look forward to a cuppa that stays warmer for longer and many cafes offer discounts when you bring your own mug. We are so proud to be collaborating with Single O on an innovative industry-led product stewardship solution for the coffee industry that keeps ground coffee out of landfills and keeps it in our communities. So far, in partnership with Single O, we've diverted over 24,000 kilograms of coffee from participating cafes. Our model empowers roasters to take end-to-end care for their product by integrating the cost of sustainable coffee recycling into their service structure. This lowers the barrier for cafes to participate in resource recovery and directly benefits our immediate communities by delivering ground coffee to local home, community, and school gardeners to nourish soil (completely free of charge!). We like to ask the question 'You know where your coffee comes from, but where does it end up?', our model champions full transparency so customers have full peace of mind that their morning cuppa won't wind up in landfill, releasing harmful emissions.
