Lynchburg City Council appropriated funding for improvements to Riverfront Park to realize the vision set forth in the City’s master plans for Downtown. These improvements will include an amphitheater, a playground, public restrooms, fencing, lighting and more. Beginning the week of March 4, crews will begin trenching operations to install electrical conduits from the southeast corner of the Riverfront Parking Lot extending along and crossing underneath the Riverwalk Trail impacting trail access within the limits of the park. This initial effort will take two to three weeks to complete.    During this time, the safety fencing installation will begin to close the site off for construction of the Riverfront Park improvements which will include the Kiwanis Playground, shade structure, a new restroom facility and the Amphitheater facility. Although the park will be fully closed for the initial phase of the work once the fencing is in place, portions of the park will reopen for public use as construction phasing allows. (Partial reopening is anticipated at the beginning of July 2024.)   The Jefferson Street Parking Lot will also be closed during construction with the exception of two accessible parking spaces and three regular parking spaces. All other parking along Jefferson Street, along with the Riverfront Lot, Depot Lot, Canal Lot, Mosaic Lot, Movie Lot and the newly acquired parking area - to be named later, located between the train tracks at the end of Ninth Street (adjacent to Depot Grille) will remain open and available for public parking.   The Riverwalk Trail will close during this time and will remain closed for the duration of the Riverfront Park Improvement Project. Trail users are encouraged to use the Jefferson Street sidewalk as a detour around the park during construction. Construction is expected to be complete in early spring 2026.
