It was a privilege to attend the annual Nebraska Press Association this past weekend to celebrate accomplishments with my colleagues, learn new ways to hone my craft and set my intentions for the rest of the year. Here are my takeaways: 1) Newspapers are thriving in Nebraska and are led by wonderful people who are unwaveringly dedicated to their communities. 2) The industry is changing but is being met with collective, creative minds who are ready and willing to not only adapt but shine through each challenge. 3) Even the stories I drag my feet on, think aren’t newsworthy, don’t put as much effort into, etc. are award worthy. Ha! 4) Good food, a few glasses of wine and incredible company goes a long way in easing any awkwardness in receiving awards – first place for in-depth writing on a community trash pickup issue; first place for in-depth writing on costs associated with a quadruple murder case; and two third place awards in news writing in the 2024 Nebraska Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. 5) It is satisfying to be recognized for my efforts but I will always see myself as a perpetual work in progress.

The first “Arbor Day”—in which an estimated 1 million trees were planted—was celebrated on April 10, 1872. By 1920, 45 states had adopted the holiday. -The world’s largest exhibited mammoth skeleton was found on a farm in Lincoln County in 1922. Originating from the Late Pleistocene Era, “Archie” is on display at the University of Nebraska State Museum. -On June 22, 2003, a record-setting hailstone with a circumference of 18.75 inches fell in Aurora. The storm left craters of up to 14 inches in the ground and caused roughly $500,000 in property damage and one million dollars in crop damage. WORLD CLASS: We're backing the BCSA - British Constructional Steelwork Association's new industry manifesto which has been launched at the UK House of Lords. It is urging politicians to take action to sustain and grow the UK's world class constructional steelwork industry. Our managing director Simon Boyd was one of the speakers at the event where he stressed the importance of access to finance. The BSCA's manifesto includes five measures: - End cash retentions - Public project procurement - Fit for purpose apprenticeships to meet the growing skills gap - Access to finance to innovate - Support for the steelmakers It is hoped that politicians will adopt the BSCA's policy ideas for their own manifestos for the general election later this year. The constructional steelwork market is worth approximately £1.6 billion per year and circa 60,000 people are employed in the sector. The outcomes and quality that UK HE provides are extraordinary national achievements, which deserve to be represented, protected and upheld.    The new Quality Council will be sector-led and sector-owned, presenting a united voice in promoting and protecting the quality of HE in the UK. It will bring together experts from across the sector and all parts of the UK to provide insight, evidence and best practice for higher education providers. Its broad and encompassing membership means that the council is genuinely sector-wide and UK-wide. It will also feature stronger student representation, ensuring that the needs and experiences of students are front and centre in all four nations of the UK.   Please do take 5 minutes to learn more about the new Quality Council for UK HE on the blog below. #highereducation #ukuniversities
