Mayor Chip Johnson recently spoke with state leaders to discuss the significance of the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund (MSOTF). The City of Hernando was honored to be invited to the conversation, where the focus was on improving quality of life for both residents and visitors through park enhancements. We’re excited to see the positive impact this grant will have on our community, fostering investment in outdoor recreation and conservation projects. MOSTF is is providing the City of Hernando $1,737,060.00 to improve outdoor recreation at Renasant Park with a new 18-hole disc golf course, multi-use lawn area, infinity trail with low-level lighting, event pavilion and two native grass and wildflower meadows. A special thank you to Senator Michael McLendon, Representative Doc Harris, and Representative Bill Kinkade for their support in securing this valuable grant for Hernando! Together, we’re building a greener and more playful future for our city! 🌳

DeSoto County unemployment numbers continue low trend. In April of this year, the last month for which figures are available, Mississippi’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell to its lowest figure ever.
Recent unemployment figures from the state put DeSoto County among the counties with the lowest jobless rates, just one-half percent more than Union County’s 1.2 percent unemployed. https://lnkd.in/gQ_ifQe7

City representatives took part in the YMCA Solutions to Youth Violence meeting. Initiatives to improve early education will give children the opportunity to succeed in school, including programs that foster health, increase wellness opportunities and quality healthcare for children and families, and providing affordable high-quality early care and education are a few of the steps that can reduce the risk of being involved in violence. As an Excel By 5 certified community we are grateful to offer opportunities in the areas of education, childcare, health and community outreach to families with young children to prepare them for Kindergarten.

Have you visited this beautiful little sanctuary in Hernando? The Butterfly Habitat/Learning Garden/Arboretum is located adjacent to the Desoto County Extension Office at 3260 Hwy 51. South. Located less than 1-mile south of the DeSoto County Courthouse, this little area is a true gem in the heart of the DeSoto County where both children and adults can come to explore nature at it’s finest. Bring a sack lunch and wander through the garden, stopping to read about the various plants and trees that are established here. Watch as the butterfly finds it’s host plant and lays her eggs, then look closely for the caterpillar that will soon become a butterfly. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture all the action as the children discover this new world of insects. Or maybe just sit & relax in the shade, listen to the birds sing and admire all the different trees surrounding you. If you’re a teacher or homeschool your children, you can ask the Master Gardeners to hold a class & tour for your group. Contact DeSoto County Extension Agent Matthew Thornton at 662-469-8480. He will work with the Master Gardeners to schedule a class. Folks have come as far away as Montgomery County to visit & take notes to start butterfly habitat gardens of their home towns. #butterflygarden #visitms #visithernandoms
