To improve our asylum system, integration, and contribution to the economy, the Welsh Refugee Coalition is setting out five key asks to all political parties ahead of the General Election: 1. Commit to the right to seek asylum in the UK 2. Build an effective asylum system that treats people with dignity and compassion 3. Review the impact of policies on No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) for those facing homelessness 4. Stand up for migrant justice 5. Commit to the Nation of Sanctuary vision of welcome

On this World Refugee Day, let's remember the importance of advocating for those who face unimaginable challenges in their quest for safety and a better life. For many, the option to change their geographic location remains a distant dream. It's crucial to support those who have made the journey but still lack the necessary support systems and acceptance in their new communities. Refugees embody resilience and courage, yet their journey often puts them in peril. As we honour their strength, we must also recognize our collective responsibility to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for them. Advocacy doesn't stop at borders; it continues in our communities, our policies, and our hearts. Let's commit to: Amplifying the voices of those who cannot move. Enhancing support systems for those who have relocated. Championing the safety and rights of those undertaking the perilous journey. UK Supreme Court’s Ruling ‘Unlawful’ Rwanda Policy: From Jubilation, Brief Relief, Despair and Fury. Today was a rollercoaster of emotions, each political news item bringing its highs and lows. The UK Supreme Court's decision, upholding the Court of Appeal's ruling on the unlawful nature of the Rwanda policy, initially sparked a glimmer of hope and relief within me. It felt like a breakthrough moment, a recognition of the struggles endured by asylum seekers. However, this fleeting sense of positivity abruptly gave way to despair and fury, as the government's swift and reactionary stance overshadowed any sense of progress. I can only imagine the intense emotional turmoil that asylum seekers, experiencing far worse, must have endured today. The government's determination to change the law to enable the deportation of asylum seekers arriving by boat to Rwanda, despite legal barriers, is both ruthless and disgraceful. Their insistence on sidestepping legal constraints by proposing emergency legislation poses a concerning threat. It truly is a disheartening experience to feel a glimmer of hope one moment and in the next, to experience the potential disregard for human lives in the pursuit of this policy. Redirecting focus towards tackling human traffickers and providing secure, lawful routes for asylum seekers is crucial. Criminalising those seeking safety not only misses the mark in addressing the root cause but also puts vulnerable individuals at risk and violates their human rights. It's infuriating to witness a privileged stance overshadowing compassion and humanity. Instead of targeting the real criminals—the traffickers—the government's response is aimed at penalising those in desperate need. I have my own personal story, living through the experiences of my refugee husband. Today's frustration fuels my determination to advocate for a system that prioritises both security and compassion. We must continue pushing for solutions that address criminal elements while safeguarding the rights and dignity of those seeking refuge.
