In partnership with The Foundation for Social Connection , with support from the Einhorn Collaborative, we're excited to release a Request for Applications, inviting communities to join a cohort learning experience focused on using our Action Guide for Building Socially Connected Communities (https://lnkd.in/e9G_2qfV).   We are seeking applications from U.S.-based nonprofits and local governments interested in using the Action Guide to foster social connectedness. Planning efforts should engage community residents, local government, nonprofits, and businesses. As of yesterday, because of those who contributed to the DCCF, one person's urgent needs are entirely taken care of, 30% of another's urgent needs are taken care of, and 10% of someone else's urgent needs have been met. We have more work to do. The clock ticks and the unmet urgent needs only become more urgent. There are more people who need to be on the spreadsheet, and we also need more donors. But this is a good start, indeed. Large contributions are amazing, but I want to remind folx that small to medium-sized, consistent contributions are essential. They are what keeps Community Care up and running. They are the backbone of mutual aid. For me, personally, within the past six months, I went from heavily needing financial support to get me back on my feet, to being able to pay all my bills + contribute on average $300 a month to people I know who need Community Care. I'm not even bringing in the big bucks. I just know where my money and time are most valuable, and I often contribute in increments. It's easy to get caught up in the "what if's", as in: "What if an emergency happens and I need that money I just contributed to someone's urgent needs?" But if these last nine months especially have taught me anything it's that: 1) Money is never OURS (it's always going somewhere) yet we're entirely dependent on circulating this money to at the very least survive, 2) Where there are opportunities to give, there is always an opportunity to receive, and 3) Neither giving nor receiving can be conditional. You just do it, and then be surprised how other areas in your life just magically open up. Robin Divine and I will continue to talk about Community Care in however many ways we need to, because it simply needs to be talked about and normalized. There's a reason why we call it DECOLONIZED Community Care, and it's such a blessing that connections and followers such as yourself are listening and having these conversations with us. Nonprofits are vital for Toronto’s communities, but they are being squeezed out of their own neighbourhoods by rising rents and lack of space. They need more affordable and long-term access to public spaces in their own neighbourhoods, where they are most needed and effective. But the City’s real estate and development practices are not helping them. They are often excluding or displacing them from community-use space. We need the City to implement three recommendations that will help address the space crisis. The second recommendation is to ensure that all municipal real estate and (re)development practices intentionally seek to expand nonprofit community organizations and grassroots groups’ access to secure and affordable community-use spaces. This includes better community consultation processes and higher standards for assessing community services needs (space, programming) in the area around any development.
