City of Albany residents will be given the power to shape the future of their city when the 2023 City of Albany Local Government Elections take place on 21 October. Four Elected Members vacancies are open for election, in addition to the Mayoral position. This will lead to the election of a new Albany Mayor, as current Mayor Dennis Wellington has announced his retirement and will not be seeking re-election. The upcoming elections will be the first for the City of Albany since the ward review was undertaken in October 2022 which resulted in Council resolving to abolish the ward system. This means residents will have the opportunity to vote for any candidate of their choice and are not limited to those who have nominated to represent a specific geographic area. Ballot papers will also look different this election as local governments across the state transition from a First Past the Post Voting system to an Optional Preferential Voting system as part of the State Government reforms. This gives residents the flexibility to rank their preferred candidates in numerical order of preference rather than having to select only one overall candidate. Good luck to everyone working on local elections today. A big round of applause on the work that you do to ensure democracy in action. 👏 Millions of voters in England and Wales are eligible to cast ballots when polling stations open at 07:00. There are elections in 107 local authorities across England, as well as 11 mayoral races. A by-election will elect a new Blackpool South MP, following the resignation of former Conservative Scott Benton. And voters across England and Wales will elect 37 police and crime commissioners (PCCs). There are no elections in Scotland or Northern Ireland. https://lnkd.in/gfQXGJ_V I worked in local government for 20 years and everyone works very hard to ensure we continue to live in a democratic society. I don't think many people stop to think how lucky we are to live in such a fair and just society - you only have to compare our society with others round the world. Voting in elections is an important way to make your voice heard on the issues that concern you. It is central to the way in which our democracy works. Voting in a local election is just as important as voting in a general election, as it allows you to effect change on a local level. Although a number of other territories enfranchised women before 1893, New Zealand can justly claim to be the first self-governing country to grant the vote to all adult women. https://lnkd.in/gt_ab4Qy UK election stats for 100 years: https://lnkd.in/gAEAXxuR

It is surprisingly difficult to (1) quickly identify what voting district(s) you live in and (2) learn about who is running to be your elected official. For my neighbors in Massachusetts, this link should help with (1): https://lnkd.in/ercQkf5s Check out Stump's website for (2).
Did you know that every election cycle, Ballotpedia produces a Legislative Competitiveness Report? The competitiveness of elections in each state is quantified based on the number of open seats, incumbents in contested primaries, and general elections with Democrat and Republican candidates running head-to-head. In 2022, the least competitive state was Massachusetts. In 2020, the least competitive state was also Massachusetts. And in 2018, the least competitive state was again Massachusetts. Guess what the least competitive state was in 2016? You guessed it -- Massachusetts. Nevertheless, this year some Massachusetts voters will have the luxury of choosing between multiple candidates. Today we are releasing our ballot guide for the following contested State Representative positions in Middlesex County: - 12th District (Newton & Brookline) - 25th District (Cambridge) - 27th District (Somerville) - 35th District (Medford & Malden) Check out our website to view the ballot guides. We will be posting many more in the coming weeks!

🗳️✨ Understanding the importance of primaries goes beyond just selecting candidates; it's about shaping the nature of US politics! Primaries are elections held before the general election where voters choose their preferred candidate to represent them in the general election. When you think of elections, you likely think of the November elections, leaving the importance of primary elections in the dust. Yet, primaries hold the key to competitive races and impactful representation. Take Texas, for instance, where the majority of congressional and legislative races have already been decided by the time November rolls around. This stems from the strategic redrawing of political maps during redistricting cycles. Because of redistricting, most contests are decided during the primary. The solution? Young people showing up and voting for candidates that represent them during the primaries. In the 2022 elections, a staggering 83% of the U.S. House was elected by just 8% of Americans. Not only do young Americans deserve better from our representatives, we can demand more! Take the first step and Vote Early or on your State's Primary Election Day. ELECTION An election is a formal group decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual or multiple individuals to hold public office. A ballot box used in France Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century.[1] Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organisations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The global use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern representative democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens, where the elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot.[1] Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). Election is the fact of electing, or being elected. To elect means "to select or make a decision", and so sometimes other forms of ballot such as referendums are referred to as elections, especially in the United States.

We’re joining 38 other councils moving to a single-councillor ward structure for our 2024 election in October! This means that Yarra will have 9 separate wards, each with 1 councillor 🙌 This change comes following a VEC electoral structure review and makes our ward structure consistent with councils across Victoria. Following Yarra’s 2024 elections, the following ward structure will be implemented from 3 wards to 9 named: 📍 Boulevard Ward 📍 Curtain Ward 📍 Hoddle Ward 📍 Langridge Ward 📍 Lennox Ward 📍 MacKillop Ward 📍 Melba Ward 📍 Nicholls Ward 📍 Yarra Bend Ward For Yarra residents, there won’t be a significant difference to the way you participate in our 2024 council elections. However, if you own a property or business in Yarra but don’t live in the municipality, it's important that you register in the voter roll by August to participate in the election in October. Learn more about the changes including a map of the new ward structure here: https://bit.ly/49A08xw

How much confidence will voters have in the results of the 2024 primary elections in North Carolina? And would they consider voting for a third party candidate? We asked a few weeks ago for #hpupoll100 and then asked again for #hpupoll 101. #ncpol About 2/5 (41%) likely and self-reported voters in the NC primary say they have a lot of confidence the 2024 election results will reflect the votes that are cast. Another 2/5 (40%) say they have some confidence. People are not, however, all that happy about their available candidate choices and say they are open to third parties. Only 1/5 (21%) are very satisfied with the candidate choices and almost 2/5 (39%) would consider voting for a third party candidate for president in 2024. #supertuesday is March 5th (as I write, that is tomorrow...) Stay safe and healthy, everyone. #hpu100 This is from page 20 of our memo. https://lnkd.in/e-kWc4RH If you are looking for the tables with the same items from HPU Poll 100, you can find them on page 14 of this memo: https://lnkd.in/eRckyN74
